Julie Ditton (storybooklady) | 234 comments I know that I can merge if the deleted edition has 5 or less shelvings. But if there are no shelvings at all, do we need to go through the process of seperating & merging the duplicate and proper edition or can we simply delete the incomplete edition with 0 shelvings?

Also the instructions say that we can't delete an edition that has an ASIN? Does that still apply if the ASIN is no longer showing up on an Amazon search?

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Hi Julie, there are other data that gets transferred during a merge. Things like translators, narrators, Listopias that might be an incorrect match for the default edition.

If you are unsure, I recommend to separate before merging.

As for editions where the ASIN no longer show up in search, they should not be deleted. It's likely no longer for sale, but that doesn't mean it's an invalid edition.

Julie Ditton (storybooklady) | 234 comments to be more specific, I have run across this situation a few times. In the case of pre isbn vintage books which are available through third party sellers on Amazon more than one copy for sale with different ASINs can get imported. They are all actually the same edition, but they end up with different ASINs. Often some of those imported ASINs or no longer available on Amazon. Most of these bot imports hae 0 shelvings.

The manual states: Note that merging duplicate editions means updating the status of the edition with no ISBN/ASIN (or an incorrect ISBN/ASIN) to "Deleted".

In this case, can I safely consider some of those imports as having "incorrect" ASINs and merge and delete them?

I remember this was addressed in an earlier thread here:

In short, print editions reseller ASINs can be marked as Invalid (not Deleted) given the criterias mentioned by staff in the other thread.

Now I wonder what should be done if they do have ratings and reviews. I would think they can also be marked invalid, since the ratings and reviews won't disappear this way. But Jaclyn's comment seems to imply we should leave them be?

I usually merge them or ask a superlibrarian to merge them if there are a lot of ratings.

L J | 625 comments The invalid third party seller books I've run across with ratings have had one rating and when I checked that was by member who rated every book by author. After checking 3 or 4 I quit checking member shelves and just went ahead and marked as invalid. If there were a lot of ratings / reviews that would be different but so far I haven't encountered that.
