Children’s chapter book, read in ~1993. Boy goes into wilderness behind his house, meets spooky but friendly gray spirits (?)

I’m afraid the title of all I have to go off of. I believe I read this book in 2nd grade, but I don’t know if it was a recent release back then or older. As I recall, a young boy goes to his backyard and explores further into the woods and somehow meets somewhat formless gray spirits or beings. Very little info, I know.
