Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Joy, I started last night, just so you know. There is no way I will ever keep up with you. lol especially right now. I have a pile on my night stand and another busty book to start for a buddy read in another group so this will will be read in bits and pieces for me. Very intriguing thus far

Joy D | 10184 comments We are thinking alike. I was just coming here to setup the Buddy Read. :-) I can start soon. I have a few to finish first. Looking forward to it!

message 4: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10184 comments I am probably going to start this later today but not going to be in a hurry to finish. I am prioritizing the Subdue books, and taking more time with the others.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I just finished part 1-let me know when you get there and we can discuss. I am only reading a 1/2 a chapter, at most. a day.

And Happy 4th to you and yours. My husband hung a tiney tiny flag (the kind they pass out at parades) on the mail box. A little embarrassing, but still I know it is heartfelt. Not sure you know, but he defected from Poland in the 70's and his citizenship here is something he never takes for granted

Joy D | 10184 comments Well, I had plans to start, but got tied up with July 4th and my upcoming move. I will start today and let you know. Hope you had a great Fourth as well. I think your husband hanging out a tiny flag is charming. :-)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Where are you moving Joy? I had no idea, did I miss you mentioning it somewhere else?

message 8: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10184 comments No, it all just came up suddenly. I'm not moving far - about 20 miles.

FYI The audio is free for Audible members. I'm struggling to keep focus on my current book, but we'll see how it goes.

Joy D | 10184 comments Great! Thanks for the info, Nancy.

Joy D | 10184 comments I am finished with Part I. I found it interesting that one of the camps allowed the prisoners to go for a hike on their promise not to escape. Don't think it would fly these days. I am enjoying it so far. Part I seems to be setting everything up - how each of the men got captured and the various experiences they had prior to being confined together. Many escapes failed. I also enjoyed the short history of aviation. The number of deaths by accident were extremely high.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Yes, the beginning of the aviation era really took a brave soul! I do remember from other books about WWI, men being on their honor (I believe only officers were allowed the privileges) to take "walk-abouts".

I am nearly finished with part two, there still is a lot of back story going on, seems to be taking a while to get to the meat of the story!

I think there are so many people involved (based on the dramatis personae list) that he is trying to provide all the info on all the people and what led up to the big breakout. At least, that's the impression I am getting after finishing Part I.

message 14: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments You are correct Joy. And Part III has me reading late-lol

message 15: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10184 comments I've finished Part II and started Part III.

In my view, Part II was similar to Part I - telling stories about the individuals and the various attempted breakouts. The author probably didn't feel that the big breakout itself could fill an entire book, so he figured out a way to build up to the climactic event. I am enjoying it!

message 16: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I am also on part 3, also enjoying. I am understanding why he felt the need to introduce all these people and I am glad for it now

message 17: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I have reached Part 4 The Breakout. Quite tense, and again I am loving. I am so involved in it, there is a possibility of my finishing it this week-end.

I hope your move is going smoothly!

message 18: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10184 comments Thanks, JoAnne! So far, so good - mostly going through cabinets and packing boxes. Getting rid of lots of "stuff" that has piled up over the years. But the actual furniture moving hasn't come yet.

I wanted to wait to continue the last sections of this book until I had a longer stretch of time to devote to it. I'm mostly just reading shorter books for my Subdue list until then.

Joy D | 10184 comments Finally had a chance to read parts 3 and 4, and once it gets to the planning and execution of the escape, it is riveting. Talk about bringing a wide variety of skills together!

message 20: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments OK, I had put this down, for a few days-will pick it back up tonight-no daytime reading this week as I have company!

Joy D | 10184 comments Hope you are having fun with your visitor!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I finished last night. This was a real thriller the last 1/4 of the book. I was on the edge of my seat rooting for these guys!

It was amazing how much they all came together and used the skills they had to plan and expedite this escape! So glad we finally got to read it.

message 23: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10184 comments I've finished too. I agree it was very engrossing at the end. Enjoyed reading it "with" you - it helped that I got to pick the trim number this month. :-)
