It's now time to get ready to vote for our first set of prompts! The thread will be open for at least 24 hours before the poll gets posted. This is a good opportunity to ask any question you may have regarding the prompts, do some research, or ask for recommendations.

Voting will open in the morning of Sunday, July 2 and results will be posted in the morning of Thursday, July 6 (CST time).

How it works:
- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favorite and least favorite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes)
- You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction thread.
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list

We are asking people to include their Goodreads profile address when they vote. To find this, just go to your own profile and then copy the URL/web address. If for some reason you can't link to your Goodreads profile, please post your full Goodreads name with enough identifiable information that we'll be able to access your profile.

Possible Prompts:
1. A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs"
2. A book with a horse on the cover
3. A book related to the year of the wood dragon
4. A book in honour of Wilkie Collins
5. A book related to night
6. A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world
7. A book with girl, boy, man or woman in the title
8. A book related to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Terracotta Army
9. A book with a number in the title
10. A book set in Paris

12. A book that takes place in 24 hours
13. A book that features a hobby
14. A biography, autobiography, or memoir

Feel free to discuss the prompts below, but please remember to be respectful to the other group members.

message 3: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I will upvote:
Wilkie Collins
Pirates
Girl, boy, man, woman
Cats and dogs
Downvote:
Canada reads ( I never like lists)
Paris ( too narrow)
Terracotta Army (China not my thing)
Number in title ( just not worked well for me before)

Samantha | 1567 comments I am looking forward to the discussion, I feel like my initial reaction is a lot of nope. I am hoping I just need to open my chakras and welcome the new possibilities for 2024.

message 5: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I love title and cover prompts. There are a lot of good options on this list. I might have all upvotes. I used to hate prompts with animals but lately I'm going through a phase of reading childhood books I never read and a lot of these have animals on them. I've been curiously into cat prompts as well.

I'm glad the one with a number in the title made it into voting. I feel like I have a lot of these on my list as well.

For the prompt I suggested there are a lot of books with girl, boy, woman or man in the title. I've been wanting to read Girl, Woman, Other. Some others I want to read:

Girl in Pieces
Boy, Snow, Bird
The Woman in White
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Girl Underwater
Girl in the Blue Coat
Final Girls
The Man in the High Castle
The Man Who Died Twice

and I guess you could do books with man in the word such as:

The Fireman

Samantha, that's how I felt too, but once I started actually trying to figure out my votes (I like to vote before everyone else so I'm not influenced as the votes come in), I found I really liked some of them more than I thought I would.

My inclination is to lean to easier prompts because of the time of life I'm in right now, but I did pick a couple that I thought would push me. I also didn't think I would vote for the 25 most beautiful places, because I don't generally like setting prompts, but I saw London on the list and that feels easy enough to tackle without being a freebie.

I ended up going 4 up 4 down.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments My first thoughts are 6 Up and 2Down

message 8: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments I like the idea of a horse on the cover, but looking through my TBR list and ... not a lot of horses.

Same issue for me with number in the title.

What are some books that you guys had in mind when you suggested those prompts?

message 9: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I am glad that someone suggested a biography, autobiography, or memoir as that was one I had been thinking of as well.

I am really having a tough time with some of the prompts for the 2023 challenge and will likely focus on voting for ideas that are easy for me to fill next year.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Yea I'm struggling with western for the 2023 challenge so horses on cover do not appeal at all lolol. (I know it's not a direct correlation but... yea).

message 11: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments Emily I appreciate the perspective and over the years have learned to appreciate the easy prompts so will keep that in mind as I ponder my votes.

The discussion is already helping, other people's enthusiasm can be infections or at least illuminating.

message 12: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Initial reaction is 7 up, 1 down. I want to like horses on the cover but looking at the Listopia I think I would ending up hating it.

I went for set in Paris over most beautiful cities because I like the Olympics connection. I have a feeling these two will cancel each other out though.

There's actually a lot of these that I really like, but part of that may just be my excitement for new prompts lol!

message 14: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1152 comments I'm voting for Paris, "It's Raining Cats and Dogs", as a Canadian, I fell like I should vote for Canada reads - I certainly have enough books from it on my list. night could grow on me - I like prompts that go a bunch of different ways.

I would have preferred "X Marks the Spot" over it being narrowly interpreted for you about pirates and treasure.

And thank you Listopia for showing me that I have zero books with horses on them on my TBR list.

I have been traveling and missed the whole process but I like all of the choices!

message 16: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments I'm another who is going for easy prompts for next year. It's going to be a busy year for me so I want to fit in books I'm already excited for.

Some of these I like because of the year connection but would probably be difficult for me to fill with my current TBR (e.g. set in Paris).

At the moment I'm gravitating towards beautiful cities, auto/bio/memoir, related to night and the two title prompts.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Dubhease wrote: "I would have preferred "X Marks the Spot" over it being narrowly interpreted for you about pirates and treasure...."

Me too, if it doesn't get through this week I hope to see it return as X marks the spot. I do want to read the next Amina Al-Sirafi book but if that doesn't happen next year I might appreciate a more open to interpretation prompt.

message 18: by Sue (new)

Sue | 98 comments What a great group of prompts! Kudos to you all. I could easily upvote all of them.

message 19: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 678 comments I don't think I would have gone for horse on the cover on my own, but I think it has some options that aren't all westerns or preteen girly books.

On the listopia, I voted for The Horse Whisperer, The Tin Horse, 100 Sideways Miles and The Perfect Horse: the Daring U.S. Mission to Rescue the Priceless Stallions Kidnapped by the Nazis.

message 20: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments I'm usually happier with the results when I do mostly upvotes. I really like the variety here.

1. A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs"
Upvote - I have many options for this one.

2. A book with a horse on the cover - I recommend Horse by Geraldine Brooks (one of the editions has a horse on the cover), and Seabiscuit. My book club wants to read All the Pretty Horses, but it might be before 2024. The Listopia might not be up-to-date so don't rule it out too quickly.

3. A book related to the year of the wood dragon. This isn't a genre I know well, but I really liked His Majesty's Dragon, and I'm reading Fourth Wing now, so there should be 2 sequels I could read. Neutral.

4. A book in honour of Wilkie Collins
I haven't read anything by him, so I'd start there. Neutral

5. A book related to night - I love this. I have tons of choices, including simply Night. Upvote.

6. A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world.
I love this one too. I have lots of options for Paris, Istanbul, London, New York, and maybe Singapore and Buenos Aires. I would shoot for five.

7. A book with girl, boy, man or woman in the title - I have to check my tbr still, but I think it might be pretty easy. I'm leaning toward upvote.

8. A book related to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Terracotta Army - If I can interpret this as read a book set in China, then it's not too hard for me. Upvote or neutral

9. A book with a number in the title - Neutral. I need to review my tbr. There might be more than I think.

10. A book set in Paris - I will upvote this, but I'm not excited about the Olympic connection.

11. A book from the Canada Reads Book Lists - Upvote or Neutral I've read many in the last 1-2 years, but I can find more.

12. A book that takes place in 24 hours - I loved Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk, but I don't see any others I want to read though. I think there are books on the pop-sugar listopia that don't fit. Neutral or downvote

13. A book that features a hobby - I'll have to think about this. My primary hobby is reading. If that counts, then this would be the same as Books-about-Books, which I always like. Neutral
or upvote

14. A biography, autobiography, or memoir - I used to find them boring, but I've read some great ones in the last 1-2 years. I recommend one of Ann Patchett's memoirs. Upvote or neutral

15. A book involving pirates, maps, or treasure - Not sure. I'd need some ideas. Neutral

message 21: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments I really like "Raining Cats and Dogs"(excites my imagination), Wood Dragon (possibilities with climate change, Asian literature, fantasy literature), Night ( could be a dark book, take place mostly at night etc), 25 Beautiful Cities ( I am doing an Around the Worrld Challenge), Canada Reads (It is not US centric, I am Canadian and want to promote Canadian authors, it has been around since 2002 so there are quite a few books of different genres etc)

message 22: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2088 comments My initial thoughts:

Downvotes:
🔹Wilkie Collins (I just don't like the prompt)

Upvotes:
🔹Raining cats and dogs
🔹Pirates/maps/treasure
🔹Biography/memoir (Any nonfiction prompt is an immediate upvote for me, well other than self help)
🔹Related to night

Maybes:
🔹Canada reads - I like it in theory, but I can also see myself dreading this challenge.... Why does Can Lit have to be soo dark??😝😁
🔹Horse on cover - I love horses and I have a bunch of nonfiction sitting around that would work.
🔹Wood Dragon - I'm not in love with the wording, but I'm big into fantasy so this would be super easy
🔹Number in title - I read enough graphic novels that it's actually a little too easy
🔹24 hours - I've done this challenge 4 years in a row now! I've loved every book, it's helped me find some great things, but still, 4 years!
🔹Terracotta army - This would push me to find something which I like....

Martha (marthag503) | 513 comments I think all these prompts would work for me so I'll likely do all up votes. I initially skipped over a book that features a hobby but I read two books in June that I loved: Soil: The Story of a Black Mother's Garden and Unraveling: What I Learned About Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World's Ugliest Sweater. Both are nonfiction and both belong in more than one nonfiction genre. Covid seems to have brought out this memoir/hobby/history/environment niche. I think this prompt will be one of my up votes.

Editing to add a list from NYPL. If Memoirs makes it and Hobbies does not, I'll use this list: https://www.nypl.org/blog/2023/01/04/...

I'm the same. I'm going to downvote pirates, because I want it to come back as "X marks the spot". While that does include pirates and treasure, I wanted it to be a bit broader to include other things such as x's on the covers.

Also, if anyone has read The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi I'd be interested in opinions. I got about 15% through and was bored, despite loving her previous books. But I'm considering going back to it.

I'm going to wait and let the discussion guide some of my votes, but I'll definitely be upvoting: Raining Cats & Dogs (CATS!!!), Wood Dragon (I love Chinese Zodiac related prompts), and Terracotta Army.

So that leaves about 4 votes up for grabs!

You can also interpret Terracotta Army by army.

So military book or a book dealing with armies engaging in battles realistic or fantastical. Or even pottery since each were fashioned and fired,

message 29: by Mandy (last edited Jul 01, 2023 02:28PM) (new)

Mandy (djinnia) | 657 comments Also, for the masculine portion of the wood dragon prompt, there is (for those who enjoy) the new danmei books coming out from seven seas. Or BL books in general.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 1
The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: Erha He Ta De Bai Mao Shizun (Novel) Vol. 1
Thousand Autumns: Qian Qiu, Vol. 1

There are way more titles but I can’t remember them or their authors. They are lousy with freaking gorgeous art!

Personally not into bl, but I can tell you grandmaster of demonic cultivation and the other three titles by the same author dominated The NY Times bestseller list. They broke records with their preorders too. It was crazy.

Also, some of y’all might have seen a Chinese show on Netflix called Untamed. This was based off of grandmaster.

My colleague just found western splatter. It’s a type of horror genre that takes place in western settings. I did not even know that this was a thing until yesterday.

Diana Palmer covers both western and horses. Nearly half of her books are contemporary western romance and 1/3 have horses on them.

They were rediscovered in the 1970s- a book written or set then.
They were meant to protect the first emperor in the afterlife- a book about a ruler or the afterlife.
They are underground- a book that takes place underground.
They were actually smashed, burned and destroyed shortly after they were made. Not entirely sure where you could go with that, but clearly they didn't work as intended!

Cool. So many not Chinese centric interpretations.

I just threw in what I could think of at the time. From past experience, I know the final suggestions get filled crazy fast.

Inevitably I think of a thousand more ways to interpret after the fact.

And sometimes too many interpretations defeats it into a read a book category for some.

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments Strangely, i am reading two books with horses on the cover right now, but i don't think that's a common theme in my reading!
I can see any of these prompts working for me. I rarely down vote anything. I am most excited about cats and dogs

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I missed the whole process, but here's my initial impressions:

1. A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs" - Love it! Definite upvote for me, even though I'm not really sure what I'm going to choose for it

2. A book with a horse on the cover - Theoretically, I like this but I'm not sure I have enough options to make it a vote.

3. A book related to the year of the wood dragon - No idea how to tackle this one, so unlikely to vote for it

4. A book in honour of Wilkie Collins - Not particularly interested. I'm not really familiar with his work, so I have no real investment in this getting through. Might downvote

5. A book related to night - Most likely an upvote!

6. A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world - I'm still super burnt out on geographic prompts, so I definitely wouldn't vote for it. Not sure I'd downvote either since there are at least some easier options on the list.

7. A book with girl, boy, man or woman in the title - Would be very easy for me since these words are common in thriller titles, so I might vote for it. I feel like it's a prompt I've seen a lot before, but there are a ton of books that fit, so I don't mind.

8. A book related to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Terracotta Army - Again, I theoretically love this but have no clue how to tackle it. My brain struggles with the "related to" wording sometimes. If I don't see a clear/close enough relationship between the book and the prompt, then it's hard for me to count it, if that makes sense.

9. A book with a number in the title - It's a prompt I've done many times over the years, but it's another one that tends eto have lot of options, so I'd consider voting for.

10. A book set in Paris - I'd rather have the prompt above with the 50 cities instead of being confined to just one

11. A book from the Canada Reads Book Lists - I'm Canadian, and I'm not really a fan of Canadian books for some reason. I looked at the lists and saw hardly anything I'm actively interested in reading, so probably a downvote

12. A book that takes place in 24 hours - This is a solid maybe, depending on the options. I'd have to do some research

13. A book that features a hobby - Probably wouldn't vote for it, but I'm not opposed

14. A biography, autobiography, or memoir - Automatic downvote for me. I'll read nonfiction if necessary for a prompt (mostly by audiobook) but it's not something I actively seek out, so I'd rather have prompts that could fit either fiction or non-fiction so everyone can choose their own direction

15. A book involving pirates, maps, or treasure - Most likely a downvote for me because I strongly prefer the "X Marks the Spot" option, so I'd hope if this one doesn't get in, that might come up later

I didn't suggest horse on cover, but have several books on my bookshelf.
Horse by Geraldine Brooks
True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey
Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson
Coal Black Horse by Robert Olmstead
The New York Stories of Edith Wharton
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain
Across the Brazos by Ermal Walden Williamson

I will likely upvote Horse on Cover, Raining Cats and Dogs, A biography, autobio or memoir, and Terracotta Army. I'm not sure yet on the others. I like all of them.

Re: a book that features a hobby, I just read A Guide to the Birds of East Africa which features a bird identification contest. Books with characters who are birders or nature enthusiasts, travelers, hikers, etc. would work.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 673 comments I like this first round list. Looks like I'll have 8 upvotes, although looking at my TBR, I don't have books that fit all prompts. For me, the Wilkie Collins one is a freebie mystery.
Upvotes:

Terracotta Army
Set in Paris
Wood dragon
50 beautiful cities

Bea | 430 comments My thoughts. Just got up and on my first cup of coffee, so this might change.

1. A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs"
I could read a book related to rain or to either cats or dogs. The animal ones, for me, are either memoirs or cozy mysteries. The rain brings to mind The Art of Racing in the Rain, Dark Rain: A New Orleans Story, The Gift of Rain, and Winter Rain. All were 5* reads for me.

2. A book with a horse on the cover
I like horses and so would most likely find a book easily with this cover. I have read several that were 4* reads for me (my usual rating for books I really enjoy).

3. A book related to the year of the wood dragon
I like dragon stories. They spark my imagination.

4. A book in honour of Wilkie Collins
Not thrilled with this one. I have read 3 of his books and given all three 3*. That is just OK for me. I would have to put a mystery in here...and that doesn't feel right to me.

5. A book related to night
I have been wanting to read Night by Elie Wiesel for a long time and my TBR has a lot of titles with this word.

6. A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world
Yes! A prompt for exploring other places.

7. A book with girl, boy, man or woman in the title
I am tired of the "girl" in title prompts. Perhaps another word or better yet a down vote.

8. A book related to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Terracotta Army
Mixed reaction. I would probably think I would need to fill this one with something Chinese...and that makes me hesitate on this one.

9. A book with a number in the title
Another relatively easy prompt...and I am a bit tired of it, too.

10. A book set in Paris
I have read several set in Paris. I think I prefer the 25 cities for more choice.

11. A book from the Canada Reads Book Lists
I would be interested in this. I do not read enough from Canada but have found that I like what I have read.

12. A book that takes place in 24 hours
Nope. Just nope.

13. A book that features a hobby
Oh, dear. Probably a cozy mystery about knitting or some such thing. I like the nonfiction memoir kind of suggestion. This one would need more thought for me.

14. A biography, autobiography, or memoir
Lately I seem to be reading more memoirs than I usually do. Not averse to this prompt, but there are not many whose lives I want to know more about.

15. A book involving pirates, maps, or treasure.
Neutral.

Conny | 646 comments I'm in the CET time zone, so "tomorrow" is already half over for me, but I guess I'll just ruminate on this a bit before voting opens :)

Possible upvotes:
1. A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs"
(Not sure yet what to do with it, but will definitely find something that fits)
2. A book with a horse on the cover
(Mainly because I still have "The Horse Dancer" sitting on my TBR unread)
4. A book in honour of Wilkie Collins
(I love Wilkie Collins and am confident I'll find a creative way to make that one work)
5. A book related to night
(More or less a freebie for me)
6. A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world
(Freebie, what with London and New York both being on that list; surprised that Vienna or Salzburg isn't, though)
9. A book with a number in the title
(Nice, solid scanvenger hunt-type prompt)
15. A book involving pirates, maps, or treasure
(I happen to have the perfect fit for that)

Possible downvotes:
3. A book related to the year of the wood dragon
(I like the prompt, but we had the "Here Be Dragons" prompt last year)
10. A book set in Paris
(Overlap with the 25 most beautiful citites prompt, and I prefer that one)
11. A book from the Canada Reads Book Lists
(Not a fan of lists, plus, there is nothing on it that's on my overflowing TBR, and I always try to stick to it)
12. A book that takes place in 24 hours
(Same prompt on PopSugar this year)
14. A biography, autobiography, or memoir
(I feel this one is overused at this point)

Jury's still out:
7. A book with girl, boy, man or woman in the title
(Feels a bit unoriginal, but it is a nice and solid prompt)
8. A book related to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Terracotta Army
(I like the prompt but have nothing to read for it)
13. A book that features a hobby
(Not yet sure what I would do with that)
