Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins.

A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realise that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home.

But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat.

I don't think Josie is being completely honest but I can't quite tell what she is lying about either
she seems odd, like she becomes obsessed with people and - like her husband said, manipulates the in to doing the thing she wants. Did she use her husband to get out of the house with her mom? Thinking he'd "take care of her"

why did she hit him? why aren't they talking?
and why doesn't she visit her daughter? and the door is blocked? does the dad talk to her?

Of course, I think it's trying to get us to believe that the dad was inappropriate with the daughters and that's why the one left - but I'm not so sure.

I wonder what happened to Erin? Makes me wonder if she hurt her? Because why was she only eating baby food?

That Roxy actually killed the friend and then blamed her. it makes sense why she left now. she was so defiant and angry! and poor Erin! What a tough way to live, with her mom just hating her, hating her trying to have a friendship with her dad! interesting that the mom felt like the door was barricaded during the day but it was open for the dad to play games with her at night

I love that her husband was Pops and helped Erin set up accounts. I hate that her mom stole her money! awful!

Josie's definitely unreliable but I absolutely don't trust her creep of a husband either. Where does he go at night? The daughter's room?

I feel like he clearly had something to do with what happened to the girls. What is her daughter doing in there? What was with the scene of the chair with the straps? Where did her daughter go? I wouldn't be surprised if there was some abuse happening from Walter too, but that seems too obvious surely. .

Also.. where is Nathan really going? And what was up with that first scene where she seemed to pick him up and then he was drugged?

And what's with the random klepto habits?

I agree that it's too obvious that Walter was abusing one of both of the daughters. But I do believe what he told Alix, that Josie couldn't be trusted, doesn't tell the truth, etc. And Josie is literally stealing from Alix every time she goes there.

I read 10% on Saturday and 90% yesterday. What a WILD ride. One thing kept me from giving it 5 stars. (view spoiler)[I really wish Josie hadn't killed Nathan. That put me off so much, I was so disappointed with that. It made sense for her to kill Walter, even if he was a good father, he was not a good man. But I haaated when they found Nathan's body. It felt so wrong.

I think Josie was still lying, to herself, at the end where she said that Roxy killed Brooke and they all covered it up. Buuuut Walter was very adamant about Josie not telling Alix about the girls and what happened...so maybe that was the *only* truth...but again this was all through Josie's lens so nothing from Josie's POV can be trusted. (hide spoiler)]
