This was originally titled The Curse of Capistrano and published in 1919 as a five-part magazine serial. I'm reading this now. It is set in early California. This is the original novel that inspired two movies (1920 and 1940). Quite a melodrama!

The Mark of Zorro

The setting is in early 19th century California during the mission era, prior to the Bear Flag Revolt.
