Trumbo just struck me as a stereotypical "used car salesman." Eli Whitaker was really full of himself and thought he could throw his weight around to get his way (if I am remembering this long after I read the book). I don't think they hit my radar as villains in the matter of murder.
At this point everyone pinged on my suspect radar. But I thought they were both nice successful businessmen. Neither man was particularly suspicious to me.
Both seemed like small town businessmen to me. I didn't think too much about them. It isn't until later in the book that I started to look more closely at these two.
Dave Trumbo was a talker. I like Charlene's description of him being a "used car salesman". It fits. Eli Whitaker was a rich rancher who didn't have much to say. I was a little suspicious of him just because he never said much. But everyone was friendly with him and I really didn't have a reason for my suspicion.
