SOLVED. YA Sci-Fi/ light Fantasy trilogy. It’s set in a village surrounded by woods, no one leaves the village because they believe there is a monster in the woods. The main character has a permanent limp. [s]

Main character has this limp because the blunt side of an axe was dropped on her foot as a child. Her father is dead. Because of her disability she is seen as an outcast. Main love interest is called Kane/Cain (can’t remember spelling). Main characters are 16-18. Love interest has younger brothers. There is one scene where everyone is hiding because they think the monster is in the village and main character and love interest hide in a well together with another kid. Part of main character's job is collecting herbs from near the woods I think. A lot of the village people also speak French as well as English, depends on what part of the village you are from. Main character is courted by one of the village council men (he is an antagonist). At the end of the first book he shoots himself. This series does not have actual magic or monsters as far as I remember, there is no monster in the woods. At the end of the first book main character, love interest and a few others leave to explore the woods. They meet both allies and enemies. I think the title of the first book has the word “winter” in it, not 100% sure. Read between 2014-2016.

I'm sure I've read this. Is it the Winterkill series by Kate A. Boorman? Her love interest is Kane and I think the plot matches. If not, I'll have another trawl through my list of read books!
