SOLVED. Children's fiction (chapter book) - Border collie/ sheepdog runs away from his farm after owner dies. [s]

My mom read this to me in the early 2000s and I'd really like to find it again. It was an older book at the time.
Sheepdog/border collie on a sheep farm in Ireland (maybe England?). Owner dies and son takes over farm, dog doesn't want to obey anyone but original owner and runs away. Dog eventually starts to find his way back, book is about his time away from the farm.
One scene that sticks with me is near the end where the dog is tired and hungry and comes across a man with a fire who shares his dinner - melted cheese on bread and I believe beans.
