Gracie McWatt | 3 comments Hi, this is my first time posting on Goodreads. I’ve been desperately trying to find this book for at least three years, with no luck. I read it when I was very young, maybe in 2012-2015, and I haven’t been able to find it since, I remember buying it from Barnes and noble, but I was so young that I have now forgotten the title.

It was a multi chapter children’s book about a girl whose name I forgot and a boy whose name may or may not have been Oliver. In the book, the girl has no color, and is totally pale including her white hair. In their society, color is used as a way to determine social status, and so the girl desperately wants to get more color. She hears about a painter who may be able to paint her to be more comfortable, but he lives off in another land and to get there she must travel through some sort of multidimensional pathway, which the boy (Oliver?) has access to. So they go world hopping in an attempt to make their way to the painter. They are attacked multiple times throughout the story, and at one point are held in a town that kills them into complacency with food because the inhabitant want to eat them. I also remember that, in the story, they use time as currency and time is stored in rulers. Once their time runs out, they are in grave danger. Also, throughout the story she girl keeps seeing a paper fox, but is warned by Oliver that the 2d world is dangerous and the fox is likely trying to trick her. I think they do eventually end up going to the 2d world. Also, I’m 90% sure that in the end, the painter ends up being her father, although I could be mistaken.

It is a very surreal book, and is also high fantasy. It was the book that stuck the most with me when I was a kid, and I desperately want to read it again. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you!

Sammi's suggestion of Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi sounds like your book.

Google Books preview:
https://books.google.com/books?id=nAU...

Quotes from the book:
- It was bad enough she'd been born with hardly any color, that her skin was the color of snow and her hair the color of sugar and her eyelashes the color of milk. She never liked to admit it, but the truth was true enough...
- ... that she could trust Oliver; she thought she'd be able to tell when he was spinning a lie. So she believed him. Oliver was visibly relieved, but Alice, who was once again distracted by the paper fox, didn't seem to notice.
