Think this book is the second series as part of one world.

The girl discovers she has magic of some sort. I can’t remember. She has to move away from her best friend to a school for magic people and can’t tell her. But what she doesn’t realise is her best friend is the main character from the first series who is the most powerful of their kind. An empress or something. And the best friends little brother is a prophet or such.

She falls for a guy, but in this world when you meet your soulmate you both get the same mark branded on your skin. They never get the brand. But it turns out they are soul mates the brand just didn’t turn up for some reason.

And the girl and her best friend have a deep connection. At one point the girl puts her fingers to the ground and is able to contact the best friend that way.

I read this at least 5 years ago I think.
