Sadly, I don't remember much about the plot beyond that basic form of travel, nor do I remember the author. I read this novel in the early 90s, but I'm pretty sure it was already an older book at that point and I believe it was a library book that I never finished.

Jack's Aunt Katherine asks him to come to Alpha I to help her pack up to move back to Earth. Jack is going to travel a new way called VOYA-CODE. In VOYACODE your real" body is put into stasis and your consciousness is broadcst into an avatar dummy. In this case on another planet.

It does look somewhat familiar. This might very well be it. Though, I could swear I remember the protagonist's travel was facilitated via winning some kind of game or lottery. Then again, it's been a very long time, with a book I never finished :D

Arthur C. Clarke's Islands in the Sky has a boy travelling to space after winning the adventure via a contest, but he does travel physically.

There were two series of books by Piers Anthony written between 1977-1985 that have various characters that travel between planets by transferring their auras to hosts. In the later books I recall some advance occurs that allows anyone to travel, but I'm not sure which. First was the Cluster series, with 5 novels beginning withCluster
Then the tarot series, which I think is more likely, beginning with Tarot
