DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments What about apealing to the publishers directly???

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy | 319 comments I am having a hard time finding Mike Gayle books and a few other authors...even on Barnes and Noble and paperbackswap and so on. :\

I have had the best luck on Amazon and Barnes and Noble from the Authorized Sellers where sometimes I can purchase books for 2 bucks...but then there is a four dollar fee to have it sent...which still isn't back for books that are tough to find. Of course, I don't know what that cost will escalate too when shipping to the UK but I have noticed that a lot of the sellers do offer shipping to the UK...just a thought.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Have you tried the swap sites like BookMooch? I often swap books with the UK through it.

Does Amazon UK do free shipping on orders over $25 on new books? We get that here in the U.S., so I keep a wish list & watch prices. Every couple of months, I'll find new books on sale & buy 3 or 4 at a time. It works out well.

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Jo, you could try www.play.com they normally have crazy sales.. right now they've got books for 60% off, and it's an English site as well. It's great for just about everything like DVD's as well.

Jo...what is the name of the book? I have a bunch of places I buy used...maybe I'll see it....

Gosh Jo, I notice that those are mostly Zombie books...I didn't know you liked zombies! ;) You can't see me but I'm shaking my head as I laugh at my own awesome humor.

Harriet | 81 comments I don't think they have the books you were/are looking for, Jo, but somewhere I usually find a useful alternative to amazon etc, is www.bookdepository.co.uk. It has free delivery on everything and they send the books individually as and when they're ready. Normally receive them within a week. And I find that receiving the books individually lengthens out the excitment of buying new books! Pathetic, I know! But yeh, I prefer it to amazon.

I think I might have to give that site a go. Although I do like the option to group my order with Amazon, I like getting a nice big box full of goodies.

It is a really good website. And from experience, I've found that they get here earlier than the Amazon free delivery. They come in little individual jiffy bags - it's far more exciting than it should be :)

Oh no, that's a shame. Maybe it's because the books I've ordered have usually been available for dispatch within 24 or 48 hours. It tells you that on the individual book's page. Maybe if it's longer than that then it's worth using amazon instead.

Harriet | 81 comments Oh, sorry, that sucks. I don't know then... maybe it's just luck of the draw.

I'm always too scared to buy of other users lol. I know Amazon is a trustworthy site, but I prefer to buy new unless I can't find the book at all.

Ok, that sounds better than Amazon's annoying little fold over box covers they use. That's the one bad thing about Amazon, I seem to get a damaged book every couple of orders because their packaging isn't all that great.

I've always been scared to buy off the marketplace, but I ordered 2 from there earlier this week... Will report back on their condition when (or if!) they get here!
Occasionally a bookdepository book has a little crumpled corner or something, but I suppose you'll get that anywhere online. Not like in a bookshop where you can search through the pile for the best copy. But, er, of course I don't do that...

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy | 319 comments Yeah, I have to say...having ordered from Amazon several times I have yet to receive a book badly beaten. It is usually in better condition then it was listed as or exactly as listed... :( That's too bad that's not always the case. Did the books come from a marketplace seller? They are not always dependable...

message 20: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments All of mine come from Amazon itself, brand new. One of them had a rip across like 20 or so pages. It wasn't unreadable or anything, it just annoyed me because I bought it new and didn't really get that. Maybe my postman hates me lol.

message 21: by Harriet (new)

Harriet | 81 comments I got two books through from Amazon marketplace today. I can't remember what exact day, but it was definitely this week I ordered them, so am pretty impressed with how quick they came (especially with the postal strike on today...) They're both new copies, in practically perfect condition. The odd crease on the covers, but I expect that wherever I buy online. The sellers I used were Price Cut Books Ltd and Queensway Books, so based on this, I would definitely recommend them.
Dean, that's annoying. You should request our postman. He delivered despite the strike :) He obviously knew how much I wanted my books!

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy | 319 comments Here are a few really great seller..just in case...Best Bargain Books (their books were in excellent condition even though they were listed as good and they sent an email asking me if I received the books okay and if not I could send it back free of charge!)
and Circle Rounder...quick and book was in great condition.

Dean: Maybe you should get to know your postman? If for no other reason then he has a face to put with the name. Sometimes I see our post man coming into the building and I follow him in and wait, chatting with him all the while of course, until he gets to my mailbox. Now when he sees me he just hands me my books and puts the mail piece in my mailbox...because I really can't be bothered with that sort of thing.

message 23: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I'm never home/awake when he delivers the post. He's a new one though, maybe it's just because he needs to learn the ropes. Or it could be every time there is a recorded delivery no one is home to collect it so he has to take it back to the post office with him.

Jo, the USD sucks, whatever your price in USD, half it and that should be the price of the book in pounds.

Jerrod (liquidazrael) Jo wrote: "Thats awesome then. Very cheap! Thanks Jerrod!"

No problem, it's the current exchange rate that keeps me from purchasing British goodies cause I have to double to price.

Maddie (showjumperpro) I live in California and can not find anywhere to purchase the book "Jatta" by Jenny Hale. I think it's from Austrialia...

Maddie (showjumperpro) Yeah, neither am I. I prefer tangible books; starting at a screen for too long hurts my eyes and the long script like form confuses me (I can never find the next line!).
