James Levine This book left a hole in my chest where I rarely get to relish a read that leaves such an impression.
Aside from the goodreads algorithm, can you think of a story that left you entirely at home with the characters, that captured the nuance of loving someone so transcendently and imperfectly, and that had an insight into a moment in time pregnant with potential?

The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay comes to mind: the semination of comic books, with a rare pair of misfits to cheer

Anoushka Not on the same lines, but Jeffrey Archer's Kane and Abel definitely left me feeling empty... After literally living through the birth and old age of the characters, one cannot just move along after reading it, pretending nothing has changed in their lives.
