Question #3: Lessons about blindness

On page 390, the author writes, “To shut your eyes is to guess nothing of blindness.” What did you learn or realize about blindness through Marie-Laure’s perspective? Do you think her being blind gave her any advantages?

I think it helped her memory and her attention to detail since that is all essential to her navigation and both serve her very, very well as the novel goes on. She adapted to her circumstances and those adaptations ended up being even more important.

I agree with Kate - her heightened attention to aural detail probably served her very well. Regardless of her blindness, it was her bravery and her resourcefulness that helped her survive.
