SOLVED. 80s YA Fantasy book starts with someone who has stolen some glider-like wings dying in a crash due to a dragon. The creator of the wings feels terrible and goes on a quest. [s]

I can't remember much more than what I've written in the title.

The inventor of the wings is an older gentleman, and the person who stole/borrowed the wings is known to them or maybe even an apprentice.

The thief jumps off a cliff at the beginning and has a fantastic time flying until he catches the dragon's attention, which destroys him and his wings in the air.

Apart from the violent opening, I remember it was a sweet book, great for my 9yo daughter who is really into dragons :).

Any clues you have would be much appreciated.
