Chike's only ambition was to be a soldier in the Nigerian army. He attended military school as a boy and always followed orders to do the right thing until the right thing was to desert the army in the middle of the night in the Nigerian Delta. The lowest soldier in his troop follows him with similar distaste for the army's choices. As they try to get away, the end up picking up a young militant, a girl separated by her family and attacked by the militants and a well off housewife running away from her husband. They land in Lagos and somehow continue to stick together as a found family trying to stay safe and find a way in the city. Eventually they find a hidden oasis, an abandoned flat in a good area with unfinished homes. They seem to find their feet a bit until the owner returns and sends them on an unexpected mission.
I quite enjoyed this collection of misfits and how their friendships build. The story gets a bit far fetched but does well to highlight life in Nigeria with the extremes of wealth, shady deals and everyday life. I'm excited to read more from the author.
