YA? Fantasy novel around a group of heroes that must close a portal or gate to another world to stop an evil army coming through. Read around 2010. Spoiler.

I think i read this book around 2010~ could be a few years before or after. The book was already old and for some reason I want to say published around the 1990

As per title the book plot revolves around a portal or gate that is opening that will cause an evil army to come through and take over the world. I want to say that the gate will cause demons of some kind to come through, however I am not firm on this detail.

There is a prophecy around who is going to be able to close this portal. The person to fulfil this prophecy will use a weapon or maybe lamp of some kind to complete this prophecy. A specific part of that prophecy is that the person to do it must be brave. This becomes a key plot point later on.


One of the main characters is uses guns (might fit the gunslinger trope), however he's the only person in this world / universe to do so. For some reason I thought the novel was related to the Jon Shannow series by David Gemmell but I've looked through those books and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Another character is a warrior that has trained their whole life to fulfil the prophecy but since they have no fear they cannot be brave so we find that they could never fulfil it.

I remember their being a princes of some description that we find out turns out to be a warewolf of some description.

I haven't read Riftwar Trilogy: Books 1, 2 and 3 in almost 40 years. So, I'm not sure it fits all your criteria. The basic premise is a portal/rift between worlds.

The only books I can think of that fit this is the Doormaker series, by Jamie Thornton, which starts with Rock Heaven. It was published later than 2010, though...

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of another title by David Gemmell.
Hero in the Shadows has all of the elements you described. It is part of Gemmell's Drenai series, and the final book in the Waylander story arc.
