I loved this book when I read it a few years ago. I went on to read the next two books, and enjoyed those just as much. I’ve also read Borne and one other book by this author. Definitely weird reads, but so interesting.
This book is really interesting - I have been reading it quite a bit. I have been stuck inside of it most of the day. :)

I finished it too and gave it three stars. I don't know ,it didn't convince me. It was interesting to read in the perspective of the main character but I feel like I would have liked more exploration of the Area and more of the dynamics between the four women. I kinda lost myself towards the end. Maybe that vagueness that Alan talks about (I agree) is what didn't convince me.Are the other books connected a lot to this one? i'm definitely not in the mood right now though.

This was an atmospheric and eerie read. The author definitely did an amazing job of setting the mood and the descriptions of place were spot on. I even enjoyed the narrator being oh so very unreliable. But.......even coming in under 200 pages, this seemed to go absolutely nowhere. I really wanted that big mind f*** that would leave me shocked and ready for am immediate re-read. Instead I found it just sort of fizzled out. I can honestly say I have no desire to re-read or continue with the series.
Definitely an interesting read. Honestly, it reads like what I imagine an LSD trip would be like. I'll have to agree with Kilgallen though, that the complete lack of any kind of ending, along with a lack of clear characters and the wordy descriptions which didn't actually describe anything made it a bit of a slog for me, even close to the end.
I both saw the movie and am now reading the book. Both are very different from one another. There are definitely elements from the book which have been adapted into the movie. It's just two very different things, and I appreciate both of them in their unique ways. In my opinion, the book gives much more detail about the main character especially, we know much more about how she feels about her husband coming back and being a new human being. It's very horrid, and I understood why she then wants to see for herself what lies in Area X. The movie is much more horror though, it's so effective in giving you chills and disturbing details. The book is much more of a psychological journey, I think. It's also a trilogy, so I don't think the first part should explain everything. I can't say right now if the second and third book will give us more details since I haven't read them. it's very atmospheric, I caught myself turning on every light in the apartment because I was too scared at night :D
Got the movie on now to try and inspire me to fit this book in before the end of the month ! Liking the build up in the movie here and reading that the book is different ! Is it best then to treat them both as their own separate thing?:)

Is it best then to treat ..."I'd say so, with the book, you can feel that it's a trilogy and I think the movie is much more compact. Both are fun though!! the movie absolutely blew my mind (and Natalie Portman RULES!)
I'm finally starting it! I saw the movie years ago. One of the original posters in this group shared my thoughts: liked the movie but was confused by the final scene. Hopefully the book can provide some context. I'm going to be on airplanes this weekend so hoping to get much of my reading done then.
I'm going to watch the movie and then start the book this week, so pumped!! ❤️
I finished this book last week and I didn't care for it. Once, I started reading it, I realized that I had already read it a few years ago and I didn't like it then either. This book just didn't hold my interest and it was a struggle to finish it. I felt like I just wanted more from this book.
I really enjoyed reading it. I was expecting to see the ending arriving the way it did. I’m glad I gave it a try. 😎
I found this to be a very interesting exploration, primarily of our narrator, but also of Area X. Her grappling with the ghosts of her past life and the loss of her husband in particular lend something of a romantic quality to the book, like the 18th and 19th century romantics. Her change separates her from the human world of cities and bars and joins her to the calm and relatively stable nature of Area X.
Just finished. From what I remember, it's pretty different from the movie. It's very trippy and surreal. I didn't love it but I didn't dislike it. It had a very dream-like quality about it.
