The winner of the May 2023 group read is Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. Please use page numbers or % when discussing and also spoiler tags for spoilery stuff :)

Happy reading friends!

Zain | 340 comments I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while. Now that it’s the winner I’ll definitely be reading it next month. 😎

Kandice | 360 comments I've read it twice. I didn't care for it the first time, but saw the movie and decided to try again. I was really glad I did. I just read my review, and I said (a long time ago!) that I would be rereading it, so I guess I will.

A really unusual story but I enjoyed it.
Hope you all enjoy it too!

Rikki | 62 comments I have a copy of this book on my shelf that I had planned on getting to later in the year. I’m happy to have a reason to read it sooner.

Aaron B | 86 comments It starts a good series; also, the paperbacks are pretty on the shelf. Happy reading.

Netanella | 572 comments I've had this on my virtual TBR since 2018. So glad it was selected!

Amanda (adimms) | 26 comments Oh, I’ve had this on my shelf since I saw and fell in love with the movie and just hadn’t gotten around to reading. Maybe this will be the push I needed to finally pick it up!

The framework of the film and book are the same, but the story lines differ a bunch. It always felt to me like Jeff VanderMeer and Alex Garland started with the same outline then filled in the details their own way.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 878 comments I read this a while back, was so curious about the story but never progressed to book 2 lol. I was afraid the series wouldn't live up to this book!

That's neat, I don't mind and will be keeping a close eye on how the story forks and where.

destiny ♡ howling libraries (howlinglibraries) | 317 comments I just read this one earlier this year and loved it! I'm excited to see what everyone thinks!

Jason | 38 comments Hold placed! See you guys in August! :D

Leigh Taylor | 71 comments This has been on my TBR list for awhile. I'm in!

Monica Go | 898 comments I've been wanting to read this for a long time. I don't have a physical copy though :/

Kilgallen | 79 comments Recently found this at a goodwill during a book buying spree. Looking forward to bumping it up on my TBR pile!

I started it early cause I'm usually behind lol and my reading this year has fallen off a cliff that was on top of a volcano and plunged into Hades basically (its been a crap year in some ways and i can't read if I'm not happy lol, also just coming off a flu that took out the whole house so i felt the urge and went for it) so apologies but 12 pages in and I'm loving it.

Didn't realize how short it was, I have the whole trilogy so will probably read them back to back if I can.

Jodi Ann | 3 comments I have read this one before (the whole series) and enjoyed it. This just might give me the push to visit it again. See how it holds up now I've also seen the movie.

Since you've read and seen, I have a question: (view spoiler)

I agree Stephanie, the writing is lovely, not sure why I expected it to be harder to read, I think the subject matter made it more intimidating to me. I've only read a short story from him before.

Carrie (brightbeautifulthings) (brightbeautifulthings) | 98 comments Had this on my shelf for a while. Looking forward to reading it with the group!

Knight | 9 comments Been looking forward to this book for a while. Glad it was picked for this month

Christine | 33 comments What a wonderful short read. I do kind of wish it were longer…..maybe. There are so many layers to this intellectually built story. Each element was interesting and important to the growth. There could have been some tangents with the other characters as I think this could have just made the overall experience just as eerie and dreadful, but I guess if not and having been surgically to the point worked out fine.

Christine | 33 comments Stephanie wrote: "I went ahead and started it, and I love it so far. I love the writing, the pacing, and the story so far. I was so glad to see it’s part of a trilogy."

Thank you for mentioning this. I was a little sad it was over so soon. Now, to get the set 😄

I only made a small dent in it but hope to get to it today :)

I'm annotating the living daylights out of it lol.

Monika I'm not a fan of sci-fi and after reading this book I'm still not a fan of such kind of book but it was interesting reading.

Alexis ₍ᐢ._.ᐢ₎♡ ༘ (alexisgetsit) Wow, so happy a lot of y'all enjoyed this read! I'll be joining too, just saved it on my library list and will pick it up this week :)

sounds fantastic. I've listened to a podcast recapping the movie, and it sounded super interesting

Badger10 | 6 comments I saw the movie first. While I liked it, I was still thoroughly confused about the conclusion. But I'm hoping the book will provide a bit more context for me.

esther i like this book! truly better than the movie

Rikki | 62 comments I finished this book a few days ago and wanted time to reflect on it before commenting. I feel that this one was just ok. There was nothing in it that I felt particularly excited about, but I don't think it was a bad read. The character was fine, and as an introvert, I felt I could relate to her in that regard. It was a quick read, which I appreciate but I was hoping that something more frightening would occur at some point. Overall, I gave it a 3.5-star rating which I bumped up to 4 stars for the sake of the GoodReads rating system.

Monica Go | 898 comments I also saw the movie first and see some differences. I'm enjoying it, the only trouble for me is I'm not very good at imagining the scenario described (not all of it) in this one.

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Haven't been active in a while, but work has given me time to read lately, so I'll jump in on this one. Just finished the last book I was reading and was looking for what to read next.

Nice Shaun, thanks for joining us for this read!

message 40: by Ruth (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ruth | 104 comments Just finished Annihilation and unfortunately it didn’t really click with me. Beautifully written and intriguing, but I found the characters, including the biologist (main protagonist/narrator), cold and robotic. While I suspect there’s probably an understandable reason why they act as if devoid of emotion and detached from each other, I ended up not caring about anyone’s fate. The tropical-feeling atmosphere was palpable, and I actually liked the ending, so I may give the next book in the series a try and see if there are some issues resolved that will pull me further into the overarching storyline.

Monica Go | 898 comments I think it is interesting but the fact that I'm reading it so slowly makes me wonder...

Finally got this from the library. Though I'm usually not one for re-reads, I always planned on giving this one a second go.
And found the prefect background music to read to.

About 110 pages in give or take, and it's shocking how little I remember from the first time I read it. I've watched the movie several times, so I think all that imagery and plot lines are clouding my mind. This definitely has some weird and unexpected stuff going on, but as someone who's read (or attempted to) a bunch of VanderMeer's works, this is arguably his most accessible.

Marie | 4029 comments I just grabbed it from the library as it became available. I am in on this read. :)

I own the soundtrack on CD but don't currently have a working CD player so I had to settle for YouTube.

Badger10 | 6 comments After finishing it a few days ago, I'm kind of shocked that I liked the film a bit more than the book. I think the styles were just different. The movie had more scary moments and played more with the imagery. While the book was more about having a soulful experience and revelation. Not a bad book but not within my taste range. Enjoy.

message 50: by Jan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jan | 49 comments I finished it today and it was Weird. It was okay but I didn't like it enough to continue with the next book in the series.
