Certain this must be it. I had a vague inkling it was by Terry Deary, but I went through his non-HH bibliography and it wasnt in there lol. Can't find it in ebook so ill have to order it and make sure. Many thanks.

Horrible Histories Gory Stories series by Terry Deary - Capn's find.
-The main character (young boy) is a street urchin imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle
-His friend is an older girl (perhaps wealthy or aristocracy) who visits him in prison
-I can't remember what crime the boy was accused of, but theres a conversation about methods of hanging, so it must be pretty serious
-There must be a detective/PI character
-First chapter is secret meeting at orphanage, with a lot of talk about 'bairns'
Spoilers Ahead (probably, my memory of this is vague at best)
The twist ending is that the detective reveals the boy is actually the girl's younger brother, who's family dumped him in an orphanage as a baby. Throughout the book she was actually trying to get him executed as to not split her inheritance (or something like that)
Its a long time since I read this and I've filled in some gaps with some logical conclusions, so I'm open to all suggestions.
