I think I read it sometime between 1995 and 2005 and was under the impression it was new at the time.

Relatively near-future, life on Earth was pretty 'normal.' Ship was traveling to another system, carried a teleporter (so crew could swap out, and the child or teen POV character visited at least once). I think the ship's mission was to build a larger teleporter at the destination system.
