Angel | 7 comments This was a book assigned to me during elementary school so some time between 1997-2002. I don't remember the circumstances of how but the boy was alone and ended up with a gruff man who traps beavers for a living. I'm pretty sure we were reading it cause there was a lot of details about the life of a trapper or mountain man which we were focusing on for history.

I'm not sure if he was traveling with the man just until they got to a town? I remember a scene where the boy pretended to be asleep and the older man said he could tell the boy was awake cause his breathing was different.

Rainbowheart's suggestion of Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen sounds like your book.

Google Books preview:
https://books.google.com/books?id=gVk... There are different cover images.

Quotes from the book:
- But won't the beaver see the trap?" Francis asked.
"He'll see it, all right," came the answer, gruff and short. "But he won't take notice, Mr. Tucket. At least not till he steps in the trap. Old Daddy Beaver goes more by his nose than ..."
- "How did you know I was awake?" he asked after a moment.
"Your breathing changed. When you quit sucking wind like an old buffalo, I figured you were coming around.
"You've sure got good ears."
"I'm alive. You don't stay that way long out here unless you can hear a little."

Angel, should we mark your request as Solved?
