The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
question
Why do you think 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo gained so much popularity on BookTok?

I think it gained so much popularity because of its plot. People love to read about the hidden secrets of highly popularized groups such as those in 50's Hollywood or the lives of the Kenndys. Everyone loves to hear gossip about what happens behind the closed doors of these groups and this book is chock full of this. Its juicy and the main character is in this limbo where they are disliked but not hated which allows so much depth that it keeps the readers entrapped in their storyline.
(SPOILER)
I think it gained popularity because of the queer theme it has. BookTok is mainly used by Gen Z and we are more interested in queerness as a lot of us feel more comfortable to identify as one. We love queer media but what we love more is the unexpected queer theme in media, one that does not do queerbaiting, and in my case, I hadn't seen it coming in this book. I had never expected Evelyn's love of her life being a woman.

Because it's such a relevant topic now with social media and influencers who have their love life focused on. Many people these days have so many divorces and affairs that this book based in the 1900's was set apart showing how celebrities aren't always as glamorous as they seem back then or now. It gives a sense of familiarity to the 21st century. The characters are so modern for a time back then, it's hard to not love a book with social standard rebellion by two people the same gender being in love. Even when those two people are so influential.
I think it became so popular because of the way the story was told. Also there aren't many books like it (in my opinion)
I thank 760Plus Credit Score for helping me achieve my long term goal of becoming a homeowner. I had a very poor credit score which prevented me from achieving my goals, (500s across the 3 credit bureaus) I have been using the DIY method to fix my credit score for a very long time, but didn't get positive results. I found 760Plus while surfing for help in a credit forum. They helped me erase negative items and my score is now 790s across the 3 bureaus. I'm recommending their services to the public as promised.
Personally, this book gained popularity because of social media and influencers. Critically, not any extraordinary writing or story telling or style. There was a small buzz from people like Booktubers who first liked this book but there was not anything exceptional in writing or themes. It was an okay story but then perhaps with rising influence of LGBTQ+ themes and characters in main stream books, Jenkin's Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo had the main character be centre in it's representation of that. Many people were appreciative of having a main character who is part of such a community and discussing the struggles and celebrating LGBTQ+ identity. Even if Jenkins did not capture the entire essence of this topic, it was evident that it will be popular for just the attempt.
From there TikTok picked it up and it's popularity sky rocketed. People wanted to promote LGBTQ rights and voice and modern feminism so they pushed this book forward and sung it's praises. Then with a majority liking the book, it became impossible not to like the book because of it's associations. If you did not like it then you are against LGBTQ community or against strong feminist character portray. Both of these are unreasonable but still prevalent when talking about this book. If you can not hate it then you must like it at least for any small given reason. Therefore, even the people against it's popularity are framed as immediate haters but not the ordinary kind, they become anti-feminist and homophobic haters. Some people with social media identities and influence do not want to be cancelled for such topics. If there is no disagreement allowed then it must be liked by every individual. Therefore every individual reading and reviewing must be positive. And there a skewed slop of positive popularity is made and maintained.

Evelyn Hugo is a brilliant character. She does not care what others think of her because she is all that and more. I compare her to Taylor Swift in the present and Marilyn Monroe back in the 50s when telling her story because eyes are on them wherever (and I mean wherever) they are publicly. Hugo is in it for herself, and she does not care what she has to do to get what she wants. She experienced in the ways of business and Hollywood to know what she is gaining and what the other side is gaining when making deals. She does not make a deal in which she gains less.
The popularity of this book is due to the complexity and coolness of Evelyn Hugo.
