i read this as a preteen in the late 60's A young boy goes to live with an elder relative.I think in scotland. he is mostly alone. meets a bird that communicates with him
winter sets in and snows he sees a large ogre type walking out in fields. the ogre is nice

The title I think has Green in it . or Glen.
