How do I combine editions with "different" authors?

How do i combine editions when people have entered the author in different ways?
I keep getting this error "No titles by the author correspond to work IDs"
Do i need to change all the author fields on the individual editions first?

Yes, the primary author should be the same on all editions. Once the authors are corrected, the editions can be combined.

Note: for books published under different names, the primary author should be the name under which the book was originally published. When a later edition has a different author on the cover, that author has to be added as a secondary author.
