Something in the sadness of this story, sadness in the romance, and the resilience of the characters enduring much like the land they live on just touched me. It's a book I re-read regularly. All of the characters and their stories are compelling. I was an avid reader as a kid who read well above my age and my mom didn't censor me. If you left a book lying around, I was going to pick it up and read it and that's how I stumbled on this book. I think I would love to read this again for the first time, now, to see if it as captivating in my 40s as it was in my early teens.
