Quillracer and Wendy - I remember watching The Blackboard Jungle. I may have to try just one of the books to see how much I like him.. Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Sandy - We've already had a whole bunch of built-ins installed and I've been trying to persuade the missus that we could use a few more. (fingers crossed) She did order me not to start letting them congregate by my night stand, so I think I'll be clearing a shelf in the lawyer's cabinet in the extra bedroom for those books.. lol

Mary - Mine turned 27 and 29 this year.. *sigh*

Before I had mine I spent a couple evenings with GnR ~ they came to our town a few times & back in the day we always got to go backstage, thinking they were with Aerosmith (love them too!) their first pass through town.
My oldest boy is furious ~ feels like musically he was born in the "wrong decade". It's pretty awesome though now, never imagined almost 30 years ago I would be going to concerts with my kids ~ it's the oddest feeling being at a concert with them and then remembering how it & I was all those years ago ~ times do change! It didn't smell anything like Desitin in those days ;P

Bill, I admit I did not finish the series, as something called "College" got in the way. But I would recommend the first ones to get a taste. The Heckler(#12) introduces us to the "Deaf Man".... (DA TA DAAA) Oh, Main character Carella has a wife described as deaf/mute.

Thanks Wendy. I'll definitely check him out.

Now how did these books get lumped in with a Classic written in the mid 1800s? Strange!

Mary wrote: "Why does this week feel 100 yrs long?"
For me it's because my spouse has been away all week. The only things that are good about that are
A) more reading time for me and
B) I can watch Criterion films -- he's more of a comedy movie kind of guy.

He gets in today, stays a few days then he's off to Savannah. We call his at-home time "freak visits home."

It usually isn't so awful, but for some reason it hit me hard this week. Oh well, he's home now and I'm going to enjoy every second!

Indeed it is. Huge wave of relief on my end. So now, let's talk about anything but me!

You'll regret those words in January. Former Chicagoan.

Sorry, Mary -- no pity from me. It's August in FL.

And Washington, DC hasn't been all that cool or wet this summer. Fingers crossed those dark clouds outside my window bring some rain!

Oh boy humidity at its worst!"
Luckily, our back yard faces east, so we only get morning sun out there. Going to my car or to get my mail is death-defying.

That was my last week, Zoe. Everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong, and of course, I was here alone. I couldn't even call the spouse for advice because he was in meetings all day and then client dinners etc.

oh god that's tough at least for me I could send a facebook message to my fiancé well shouldn't really but you know its done by others lol. but is it bad if I am excited about my new washing machine :P

hugs you are not alone everyone here is here for you :)

Hated HS too. I fondly remember a few mentor teachers, otherwise I was miserable. Halloween back in the 70s and 80s were just the best.
As far as weather> they tell us that even if El Nino hits us HARD here in California, we will still be in a drought situation. We need at least two years worth of El Nino weather to get us out of the situation. It is likely parts of the state is going to flood badly do to the drought, fire-erosion and poorly built and ancient levees. Experts say our levees are worse shape than Mississippi's and Louisiana's and the Powers knew this 10 years ago.

This is disconcerting as I keep thinking that the character is a woman and keep getting pulled out of the story as I readjust my thoughts.
I have no idea why the publishers of the audio book would do this. What....they couldn't find a man to narrate the book?!

It is a good short story. I listened to it last year on Overdrive. I had no idea it was a short story first. I watched about half of it this afternoon.

I understand depression, for whatever that's worth to the conversation. I'm sure he'll be fine when he gets to a good place.

I, too, understand depression. I have seen the depths of depression and I hope he gets the help he needs - if that is the kind of depression he has.

I hope he's able to get whatever kind of help he needs.

We saw a really good Poirot last night -- "Five Little Pigs," also published as Murder in Retrospect. It sort of takes the "Rashomon" approach. Even Mr. Film Critic really liked it.

I hadn't heard anything about this. I thought The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was a good book; it would be a shame if it got banned from schools.

Every year my kids were in high school there seemed to be one book that someone thought should be "banned". Every time you did some digging you found that there was always another book option for the student to read so the child who was being "harmed" by reading the book really didn't have to read that particular book.

That's the case here. But just because mom doesn't like the wording in the book (that her son is no longer reading) is no reason to call for it to be banned.

Quite honestly, I never understood the anti-Harry Potter contingent.

Says the man that probably never read the book for himself. My mom said the same thing to me when I went to read the book. She said that the pastor stood up in church and told his congregation that it was about Satan and to under no circumstances let your children read it. I couldn't believe that 1 she would believe him and 2 let his opinion be her own. She actually believed what he said! I was just in shock. I told her that she needs to form her own opinion and not some pastor of a church... who probably didn't even read it himself.
