Lighting a candle now in support of the case being dismissed.

Thomas (tom471) | 2003 comments Laugh of the day.
I watch CSPAN on weekends for nonfiction book talks. Jon Meacham , American Historian, gave a talk on his newest book. He received a glowing introduction. He came to the podium and thanked the speaker introducing him. He said that whenever he receives such a wonderful introduction, he comes back to earth by remembering 1 day at the airport during a layover. A woman came up to him saying; "You're Him!! You're Him! Please wait while I go to the bookstore and buy your latest book so you can sign it." He said "I'll wait." She came back with a book by John Grisham. He said "Somewhere out there, there is a woman who is the proud owner of a forged signed John Grisham book."

Wendy | 581 comments I am watching our news. I have just realized I have Linda Farstein on my reading list. I may have even read her books. She was the prosecutor involved in the Central Park Five case. Five minoroty young men were prosecuted and convicted of rape of a white woman. They served 30 years before 100% exonerated. Lots of misconduct and coercion on the law enforcement side....

message 874: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments I’ve read several Fairstein books but didn’t connect her with the Central Park case until the news broke. I’ll be interested to see the Netflix movie.

Interesting. I read some of her books (along with my mom) 20 years ago, but I didn't know she was connected to the case. She kept making her protagonist a target of the murderer too, (as did Patterson and many other writers), which is a trope (if that's the right word) that I grew to hate.

I wonder if the police were the ones questioning the boys, or if her office was directing the excessive coercion.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) On a sad note, I got a message telling me that Skye (Skye Skye) passed away this week. I met her in this group in 2018, and she was a very lovely woman. RIP Skye.

I heard she lost her publisher because of that movie/reaction to it.

I would think thar police are usually the questioners. Although the DA in the early Law & Order shows was based on her.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments I recently started reading The Smell of the Night by Andrea Camilleri.

Looking at the New York Times tonight and discovered he recently died. He was in his 90s, hadn't started wring Maldonado books until his 60s. Some time ago he wrote the final book, much like Agatha Christie.

T (twoo) Went to a warehouse book sale today, first time, not sure what to expect - lines? Crowds?

Not too bad, kind of hard to get to the book shelves, but not crammed. A lot of "excuse me, sorry, trade you places?" Warm in there, a little fragrant at times. Got hit by backpacks that people refused to remove from their backs. Others brought little carts to haul their booty away in.

$25 for all you can cram into a bag. People with their books spread out on the floor trying to economically pack it all into their bags. People walking out with 4 crammed bags.

One woman told her friend she'd be out in 30 mins, and a few of us, strangers just the same, said "Uh huh, yeah sure"...Woman giggled...two bags full, said she'd been there 1.5 hrs already.

Our local Rotary Club has a big used book sale twice a year. I try to go once each year and wander around for an hour or so. 3 books for $5.00 and then on the last day, $5.00 for a bag. I like them.

message 899: by T (new)

T (twoo) It was fun - these were used books as well. I wish the cook books had been segregated out of the "non fiction", but I get it, they don't have time to do that, any more than they have time to alphabetize by author....

It's a 2 day event, they are restocking the shelves for tomorrow, but one day was enough for me...

Sounds great. The local AAUW has an annual sale over 5 days, last year they collected 35,000 books for the sale. Didn't hear how many they got at this year's. I've started taking just one tote bag with me. When it is full - I leave. Especially when I still have books unread from the previous year or so.
