How can someone like a review you haven't written yet?
I sometimes get likes because I have put a book on my tbr list. If someone who is a Goodreads friend puts a book on their tbr list that I have read, I like that. Have I got it wrong?
This is cut and pasted from my Notifications:İntellecta, Geo Marcovici, Mr Ampaabeng, and 1 other liked your review of Cold Girl (B.C. Blues Crime, #1).
I have not read nor reviewed this book.

That like has zero to do with a review; it relates to the action they specifically took — adding it. I probably receive a dozen or more likes per day from friends for the same reason, e.g., I added a book to my TBR shelf and they are glad I did so, either because they are fans of the novel or because the book intrigues them, as well. Why on earth would a “like” ever bother someone? I’m puzzled...
I’m with you, Thomas.

I enjoy the Likes and the acknowledgement someone has done TBR from my Reviews and Lists. I have frequently added books to my TBR from this group- especially with the State/World Challenge. But I find it weird that I get a "Liked my review" when there is not one. "XYZ has added "Titled Book" to their TBR " would be more accurate. It is late, maybe I am being nit-picky. I was just so excited I had 4 people enjoy a Review I wrote - then realized there I had not even read the book let alone Review it.

There should be some other way of people approving of books on a person's TBR list than 'liking' a review they've never written.
I think there are only two actions you can take, from a tech perspective, on GoodReads. You can create an update, or everything else is a "review". Changing your shelf status, updating the content of a review, etc. - it's all recognized as a review by the system. So if your friend takes an action, you're either liking an update or liking a review.
Having said that, I'll admit that my initial reaction might have come across more vehement - we can all always agree to disagree - because I recall after I'd been active on this platform a couple months - bumping into a thread in one of my groups where one user was complaining about how awful it was that other users sometimes like older reviews. Her net viewpoint, with which others in the convo agreed, was that only brand spanking new reviews should ever be liked. I determined then that the friends whose updates and comments I most enjoy are those who engage with all of my many activities - they support me in liking older reviews, new reviews, no reviews, whining, posting quotes, gaining new friends, etc. The key is for all of us to find a tribe where we're welcome and don't feel as though we're triggering someone else's no-no button. I wish everyone luck with that, since it brings much book happiness, lol.
I'm not clear why people would object to someone liking an 'old' review. That seems nuts.Maybe a person just came across it recently and liked it. I'm always pleased when one of my 'old' reviews gets some new likes. 😊🍀💖

Exactly!!!

They wanted to maintain their reputation for reviewing current books, and viewed it as a faux pas for another user to like old content. Other friends don’t want anyone to like their ratings if there is a review coming; we’re all supposed to wait until they populate the review with ... their review. So c’est la vie. I want people to engage with any action or content connected to me, and wouldn’t discourage any positive actions, and I’m okay annoyed that some folks simply must control others’ actions. But now I probably need to watch more dog gifs :)

Current books aren't always the best books. Just sayin'.

I'm always happy if someone likes one of my reviews, new or old. If they share book interests, I send them a friend request if they aren't already friends.
Thomas wrote: "I'm always happy if someone likes one of my reviews, new or old. If they share book interests, I send them a friend request if they aren't already friends."Second that....I guess I use GR more for me - track the books, leave my two cents whether anyone likes it or not.
Frankly I'm amazed if I get any response on some bread crumb I've left (ooh! I got email!). Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I stopped playing games cuz I'd get a little nutty that so many folks would forget to page forward and respond to the last entry when maybe we had a hilarious streak going on - but that's my quirk and my problem to resolve...if it brings them enjoyment however it's played, cool...if it bothers me, I wander off to go find another bright shiny thing (or book!).
Cheers, folks - enjoy what pleases you....
I had NO idea this would create such a storm! I agree with "T". My first reaction is almost always "OOOOO! I got responses from: my review, my comments. Or I got a Friend Request!!
Thomas, for me, I kinda ask for friend requests and accept friend requests in a certain way. I often compare book readings to mine and read reviews. If there is enough agreement I usually accept.
I will NOT accept a Friend Request from some strange author who has no TBR listing other than their own books, no reviews and no comments contributing to a thread.etc. I get those requests about 6 times a year....
LOL...so the dude who is randomly putting answers into the games without regard to the intent of the games would be blocked by me if I could block him. But then again, so would the people who forget to page forward to respond to the last post, not their last post....I'm kidding, because I am the one with the "alternate alphabet" and often am equally too blind to see that there is a whole new page of responses from my last page of responses.
Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it....

Occasionally a 'new friend' immediately asks me to read and review their book. I don't appreciate that.
Barbara wrote: "Occasionally a 'new friend' immediately asks me to read and review their book. I don't appreciate that."Yeah — that’s an instant ‘remove friend’ act for me.
I would second that, but it's not happened to me yet...Probably because I rarely accept new friend requests unless they look legitimate - ie, they have friends, they have book reviews, they have books on their lists that match up with mine or they look like interesting people.... yeah, I'm a snob, but as I've said before, I'm more into this for me, than for social purposes....

I'd never heard of it, but it definitely sounds different. Thanks.

I like it!
That's a great idea, there is a whole industry built around women in distress. But the consumers of these novels, movies and TV shows are mostly women.
I was just having this conversation yesterday with my tattoo guy. The trope is so predictable and numbing. It’s also disturbing the number of ways people come up with victimizing women. I had a discussion with a horror writer friend of mine about this—on Facebook, other writers chimed in—can’t remember much of what was said. But the gist was, they were defensive about it.
I’m sure they are. This “radical” idea messes with their income and ease of ideas. But if we started reading staunch thrillers they would dig deep and start writing staunch thrillers.

For all those PNW folks....stay warm and safe, hope you got your groceries and have powered up all your devices......I, for one, will be most delighted if the weather forecasters are wrong wrong wrong for the next 7-10 days with regards to the Washington State impending snowpocalypse!
Here in Western New York, we have had in one week, a blizzard, deep freeze, record warmth(60F), flooding, ice storm and high winds today.

I really feel sorry for my snowbound friends. We are having absolutely beautiful weather in Florida right now. Still a few months from hurricane season, one of our two seasons here. The other is tourist season.

The weather has been so weirdly warm here (FL) that we actually opened our pool in February. Normally it's mid-April.

However, I have 2 pet peeves. One is when an author "Reviews" his/her own work. I find the action pretentious at best and at least just rude. The second, is a Goodreads algorithm. It shows people "like" a review I haven't even written because you simply have it on your To Read list.
