We’re introduced to the assassin The Monk in this story – a stone cold killer for hire. The Sowing Club utilizes his services to murder Catherine and a second time to take down Michelle and Theo.There’s a scene where Monk recalls killing a young girl. What’s the purpose of this seemingly unconnected scene? Thoughts on this killer and his demeanor, his escape to kill another day? Were you surprised? Was justice served?

Monk was a real ghost. We found out very little about him and his motives, other than money. That scene was there to discourage us from having any warm, fuzzy feelings for him, although I really think this character fascinated Garwood. He was all business when it came to his job. When the job went sideways, he bailed. He wasn't going to get caught. The Sowing Club was caught or killed, so there is justice in that.

I believe the author wanted us to know that Monk wasn't going to turn out to be the assassin with a heart of gold. He was a cold killer who did it for the money. I wasn't surprised that he got away. I also wasn't surprised that he took out John who seemingly got away.

I agree! And I thought it was poetic justice that he hunted down John in the end!!
