I am looking for a series of young adult fiction novels with a paranormal/thriller genre. The books follow several teens who are in comas, and being in comas causes them to become ghosts. They can only interact with "dead" objects and places, like a burned down forest they mainly live in for most of the first book. If they try to walk on a surface that isnt "dead", then they sink through the ground and dissapear. There are some dead people there too, if I remember correctly.
The villains have the ability to posess living human's bodies. They use these powers to try and kill the main characters who are in comas at some point toward the end of the series. I read this series around 2011-2015, at the earliest it wouldve been published in the early 2000s, and no later than 2010.
Some more details are that ghosts who were dead and not just in comas would be stuck the way they were when they died. Their clothes would be the same, and for example a boy who drowned was still dripping with water perpetually. They also didnt have to eat, but could still eat "dead" objects, like stale food or food items that were on people when they died such as a chocolate bar one person had. The main character was a teenage boy who was stuck in a coma, and another notable character was a girl who was also in a coma. Another detail, it that the ghosts traded items which were "dead" since they were so rare, and so had a barter system of economy.
One last detail I rememeber that is a bit disturbing is that the villains who can possess living humans attack a school at some point, and kill people. Thankyou for any info or leads!
