So the ghost boys are always good? (And the malevolent being is someone/thing else separate from the boys?).Any names you can remember, or setting? Might be hard to search for - hopefully someone will have read it and recognizes it.
I was going to give a 'friendly ghosts' list, but there are a few of them, and none of them very highly powered...

First half of the book is the main character boy (MC) feeling something's suspicious about the house, then discovering the presence of ghosts that haunt the summer house and its grounds. MC's parents are well-meaning, but kind of neglectful and oblivious.
For some reason (probably because they are the only living children in the house), only the MC and his younger brother are able to see the ghost boys. They all become friends, and the ghosts tell them they were killed, possibly by an evil stepmother or caretaker.
During the climax of the story, either the MC or his younger brother gets lured by the malevolent being to climb a tree in the woods surrounding the house to h*ng himself. He gets saved, somehow.
Important to the story-- the summer house is managed by an elderly couple who the MC initially thinks are stern and frightening. However, at the end of the story, it is revealed that the couple are aware of the presence of the ghost boys, and act as their unofficial caretaker. I don't think they can see the ghost boys, though. One of the last scenes in the book are the ghost boys saying goodbye to the elderly couple before moving on to the afterlife.
