book about a kid in poverty who was dealing with difficulties

read a book about some boy or girl who was in a time of poverty. their families house was small and they had to worry about food. one day, a bear was trying to enter their home and the mc had to try and save their home. i don’t remember whether the bear got in or not. i think they ate bacon or oatmeal and the character hated it or something. i think there might have been something about an art gallery or museum as well. the main message at the end was being independent and something about African Americans. i read it around 2015-2021. please help me find it
the kid might be around 10,9 possibly 8 or 7. not so sure.
i read it for school
or maybe this whole thing is me remembering a dream that i had. not sure.

Could it be Because of Winn-Dixie? The MC spends a lot of time at the library and the librarian there tells a story about fighting off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE.

i’m not so sure, sorry. im assuming it could be historical fiction or fiction
