Question: I'm looking at a 5-book MG & 3-book YA series by the same author. Would I still achieve the bonus points for the 3 YA books? (Assuming I'm the only one reading this author on my team.)

I also have a question. I have four full length novels and one short story by an author. The story is only 27 pages but could I combine it with a short story by another author and still claim it for the author who I've also read the full four length novels for?

Yes, if you combine two books to reach the minimum page count, you can pick which author to use ☺
