Early-mid 2000s YA book in which character tries to escape a boarding school.

I honestly don’t remember much about this book except that the character is trying to escape this boarding school. At one point during the escape, he was cutting either a wire or part of a wire fence, and did so in a way to make it look like a rodent had chewed through it. I think maybe there was maltreatment of the students, and he was trying to get to his sister or a friend.

Was the boy a teenager or a younger child?

Was it a regular boarding school, or more like a residential school or reform school?

I think he was a teenager, but I could be wrong about that. I also think it may have been a reform school. Sorry that’s not very helpful, I have only a vague memory of the book but I remember loving it!

I cannot say for certain that it was a boarding school as opposed to orphanage, but I think it was a school. I remember it being modern day.
