The Toll-Gate question

It would not go to a female, the estate would go to some distant relative like a 3rd cousin or such. I like to imagine them staying behind and keeping things going until a new heir, perhaps fresh back from the war, arrives with a young family. The servants would love them. I think John's mother would come to help with the funeral arrangements and meet her new daughter-in-law. I imagine the side characters and John setting up a stable and making money on it. His estate was more modest than most in a Heyer story.
