I am trying to remember a book where an elf is sent to the land of trolls to spy on them, messages are sent via dreams and interpreted into pictures that are shown in the book but in the end of the book it is discovered that Trolls and elves are the same race.

It is a book for teens but it is an older book.
By older, do you mean '70s or '80s?It would help to know what year you read it, approximately.
Were the elf and the troll male or female? Were they adults or teens?
