"Goodreads considers the following to be valid book records:
[....]
short stories published online (the format should be "ebook") "

BTW is discussion is on Reddit. Reddit is not the publisher.

"short stories published online (the format should be "ebook")" are valid record (https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...)
provided that they are not part of Magazines or only published in an anthology or magazine (https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...)
If I am wrong, please post the link so I can learn.

What do you or Goodreads gain by doing that?
As a user I want to be able to post links to stories and recommend them to other users. I want to keep track of what I have read so I can find them again many years into the future. Why do Goodreads want to prevent that?
Corinne wrote: "there are other sites that let you add individual stories "
So you are seriously suggesting that the solution is to go somewhere else? That does not sound like taking care of users.

Please add this version, so it does not get deleted.

You would need to address the specific issues with Goodreads. Librarians do not have input into those policies.
She was just offering you an alternative that she is aware of, as a courtesy.
As Corinne mentioned we would be happy to add books from Amazon, Lulu, etc.

You can export your books hereto keep a record locally:

Yes, I noticed that short stories are to be marked “invalid” not deleted. BUT that is only for those published in a magasine.

Since the end of 2022 about 2000 pages has gone missing from my 2022-stat (this one: https://www.goodreads.com/review/stat... ). So either some librarians still delete book records or this is very new.
2021 used to be the year I had read most pages in. Now it has dropped below 2019. It is so annoying.

This used to be a 16 page short story. It has now become a 1 page audiobook - and invalid.

NOT A BOOK by Jorge Luis Borges

(actually I would love to read a story by Borges called 'Not a Book')

Unfortunately unless it has been published on its own outside of the magazine, it doesn't count, and being read on a podcast doesn't qualify. It has to have a "book" version (published on its own) before appearing within a podcast.
That's why the policy says
"podcasts of books" with "books" in bold print
Corinne's example above is the best one.

The only thing I can find is that it is part of a magazine called Cast of Wonders, and was read on their podcast.

I have also tagged one of them as "invalid" and that works fine.
