i love annotating. it makes it so much easier to go back to your fav books and just reread your fav parts without having to read the whole book. i def recommend!

i used to be so scared of marking up my books too, but once i started annotating it’s hard not to annotate anymore lol. just have fun with it! highlight or underline anything that sticks out to you, tab pages or quotes you want to be able to refer back to easily, and write little comments or thoughts in the margins and whatnot. buy yourself some cute supplies and just have a go at it, overtime you will get more comfortable with it and will start to develop your own sort of system for annotating that works best for you:))
you can get highlighter tape, annotation strips, and annotation tabs if you're worried about marking your books in the beginning. once you get more comfortable with the idea of annotating, you can transition to actual highlighters or pens. this way if you decide you dont like annotating, you can just take the tape and tabs off :)
I'm new to annotating too! How I've decided to start is color coding what I highlight. It's a perfectionist trait of mine that you don't need to do, but I recommend for keeping your thoughts and notes organized!
I started out with annotating ebooks, and then I annotated a book as a gift for a friend to help me get an idea for my color coding... and now I can't stop! I'm going to second Katie's comment above about highlighter tape and tabs. Those helped me a ton. Plus! I've found transparent sticky notes lately ($4 on amazon!) So if you don't want to *actually* mark up a book, grab a pack of transparent sticky notes and some colorful tabs and annotate to your hearts content!
I like using translucent colored sticky tabs. Then I don't have to ruin any of the book. I do really love the ability to go back and reread sections of a book that I really love. I like to categorize them out so for instance blue may be very sad and longing moments, light purple might be information on the world in which the book takes place and pink could be shocking "omg" moments. Hope this helps!
