What have you just read? Opinions, Recommendations, and Reviews, part 3
I've read some DARK and some LIGHT fiction recently.I just enjoyed a return visit to Chief of Police Bruno Courrèges in southern France in Martin Walker's Dordogne Mysteries. In The Dark Vineyard, wine, food, and festivities are disturbed by sabotage and suspicious deaths.
5★ My review of The Dark Vineyard
Terry Pratchett has left us with libraries full of fun, so of course I enjoyed The Light Fantastic. Discworld is on a fatal collision course and inept wizard Rincewind is needed to stop it. As entertaining as ever.
4★ My review of The Light Fantastic

But this one ... it's my favorite.

I had high hopes for this one, alas, I couldn't even finish the book. Valerie Plame's, the CIA agent's, book "Blowback."
1* star.

I read The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng. This is the third novel I've ready by this author. I loved all three, but I think this is my favorite. His writing is always eloquent and elegant. And he tells such great stories. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review of Heart of Eden by Caroline Fyffe

Water. We begin life in water, we are made up mostly of water, we play and exercise and refresh ourselves in water. The protagonist in award-winning Irish author John Boyne's new novel is both drawn to it and repelled by it. I'm biased - I always love his work. 😊
My review of Water
If you'd like to amuse yourself for a few minutes, have a look at Laura a classic short story by Saki. It's free to read.

The Boatman: suspenseful, traditionally-inspired ghost stories by Annalisa Crawford
Annalisa Crawford is one of my favourite indie authors for a reason. If you are a short story fan, do try this collection. Don't worry about the ghosts - it's not a horror book.

A cure for depressionHey,
I am not writing a review. But this small book gave me great pleasure
I couldn't imagine. Most of it's free verse poem. I am glad that I read it.

It's your own book, isn't it? It's okay if authors promote their own works, but at least be honest about it.
Kids, Christmas, myths.
Kid Christmas: Of The Claus Brothers Toy Shop
is David Litchfield's colourful interpretation of a Santa Claus /Saint Nicolas origin story. Beautifully done. I think kids will love it.
My review of Kid Christmas with many illustrations and a summary of the story
I read A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki.I enjoyed it somewhat, but I couldn't figure out exactly what she was doing or where she was going with it. Perhaps it just wasn't for me.

Majnun and Layla: Songs from Beyond the Grave by Yann Damezin

I just enjoyed The Mystery Writer by one of my favourite authors, Aussie Sulari Gentill. This one has a couple of Aussie characters in the US, caught up in murder, conspiracies and preppers. Good stuff!
My review of The Mystery WriterIt's not out until March, I think, but it's been available for review for a while now, probably hoping fans will pre-order perhaps. 😊
I read Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah, the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature. This is the second novel I've read by this author. The novel is about a young boy who is sold as an indentured servant to pay for his father's debts. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review of The Desolations of Devil's Acre by Ransom Riggs

The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave shows the cruel reality of life in Finland's harsh and frozen far north in the 1600s. Witch-hunting was rife. Based on true events.
