Matt Dreiling | 2 comments I classified this as Dystopian because it seems like a metaphor for the rise of fascism or authoritarianism. It is set in contemporary times. (which would be the 1970's which is when it was written if memory serves) I think it was set in New Hampshire. I read the book around 2017.

A mysterious man moves to a small town and eventually becomes mayor. Little by little he forms a cult of personality by which his "soldiers" do his bidding. The mayor demands a tithe of sorts from members of the community which starts out small (like tools or services) but eventually grows to absurd proportions. (like automobiles or even homes) The only way to escape the tithe is to join his cult.

I don't remember with much clarity how it ends. I believe the tension escalates to the point of violence and then open warfare between the cult and last remaining citizens. I think the mayor eventually gets assassinated and things return to normal.

The edition I read had a "Norman Rockwell-esque" cover depicting a rural scene in winter with a barn and a red tractor or pick-up truck. At least that what I remember.
