Week 8: 2/16 - 2/23

I think that Mocking Jay did that too, but Katniss' life was more traumatic than Tris' leaving a depressing ending.

I finished Dear Justyce this week. Not sure what prompt, maybe a book I meant to read last year. Actually, I started it last summer... It got a lot better in the second half. I think I preferred Dear Martin, but Justyce was good, too.
I'm currently reading When Christ and His Saints Slept, really liking it.
Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story for celebrity memoir. I already have a gripe, though. If each chapter is named after a U2 song, shouldn't the first chapter be "One"? lol
Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War very interesting people.
I've also gotten back into Les Miserables. I'm kinda over the part I'm at, but I shall persevere.
QOTW: I'm a curmudgeon and my only social media is goodreads. I do occasionally look at bookpage.com. I'm always browsing news for articles about books and especially book banning.

What did you think of The Menu??

I’m still home. This is one nasty cold. I’m finally seeing the end of the tunnel though. After some night sitting up on the couch because of coughing fits, I’m stopped the decongestant meds today. I’m only coughing in small spurts after long stretches of time.
I’ve been binge watching anime for the last few days.
I finished one book that I can remember. I think it’s for Aty. The ‘W’ one. Why Shouldn’t a Detestable Demon Lord Fall in Love?! Vol. 1
There might be more but I’m sorta just blah still. I just want to get over this cold.
QOTW:
I have like every newsletter that book publishers put out and on Facebook as well. There are a lot of sweepstakes and giveaways posted on them.

OOHHH Thanks for this!! I need a book with a character that has my name for a Bingo Challenge and this sounds *perfect*

Yes that was so disappointing!! I really wanted to love it, but it just kept letting me down.
and the endless question about whether audiobooks count (Of course they do!).
LOL why does that question get asked ALL THE TIME?? It keeps getting posted on the Popsugar FB group. I'm starting to wonder if these people are just trolling at this point.

I don't know about you all, but I can barely sit through regular tv anymore. I don't have the patience for commercials and I don't have the patience to wait weekly per episode. Even when I watch Superman & Lois, I record it so I can skip the commercials (and that's the only show I watch anymore).

Also starting to plan out my reading list for the month of March. These are the two/three books I have planned so far:
1. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
2. Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick
3. Wrapped/Surprise book (TBD)

Sounds like you might enjoy reading The Violin Conspiracy! It's a pretty basic mystery about who stole Ray's Stradivarius, but he mentions a lot of classical pieces played on violin. There's even a Spotify soundtrack put together by the author.

YES! How is it that all social media is moving away from the clear, crisp, chronological newsfeed??? It's making me less and less interested in all of them.

I cannot disagree with most of these!! A lot of that stuff made me unhappy too, and I had forgotten some of it. But I didn't end the book sorry I had read it, like i did with Allegiant. I guess I felt that - even though I didn't LIKE Katniss's choices - they were choices that followed naturally from the events in the story.
And I thought Tris's choice was needless and did not automatically follow from everything else that was happening. I never liked Tris anyway. Honestly I'm not sure how I felt about Four in the books because HELLO THEO JAMES and now I love Four and can't remember how I felt before I saw the movie.
That might be a good discussion question sometime - can you enjoy a book if you hate the ending?
LOL yes that could be a fun topic!!

Long story short, I chose I, Robot by Isaac Asimov for A book you should have read in high school for rather sad (and now silly) reasons. In h.s. I didn't have a lot of friends (being a comic book, dungeons & dragons, SF geek in the early 80s and being female on top of it) I was the only girl in the SF/F reading group and the boys loved this (and the foundation series). I didn't like that and I really tried to read I, Robot. Nope, couldn't do it. I pretended I did so they'd keep talking to me.
So I said I read it back then and lied. Now was the time. Yeah still didn't like it (and skimmed a few of them). Forty years didn't make it better.
QOTW Honestly I don't have too many that aren't other challenges more in genres than prompts, like literary escapes, cloak and dagger and the alphabet challenges all on FB. I use netgalley for arcs but I don't hang out over there. I have an ungodly of author newsletters but most end up deleted unread.

Yeah, we pretty much watch streaming all the time now. Sometimes it's Netflix originals (like You and Wednesday), sometimes it's regular shows that are now collected on Hulu (like Dollhouse and Abbot Elementary)

That's funny that you've had ice all day. Did power go out up there? I think it's supposed to snow a bit overnight.
I didn't notice the option to scroll through pictures, but I will go check!
EDIT: Nope, just the one.
I texted my brother about Bono's book and his (completely dry) response was "that's it, take it back." Lol, I'm not actually that bothered by that choice, it just seems funny to me. And I've been listening to One (and also Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, a very underrated song of theirs if I do say so myself) while I've been reading.
And count me on team Gale!

I made a quick dash to the library Tuesday at lunch time, after they reopened from being closed on President's Day and before they closed for the blizzard on Wednesday. I had finished some books and needed to restock before the bad weather.
Finished This Week:
The Stars Undying by Emery Robin. Retelling of Cleopatra and Caesar - in space! - that was incredibly true to their story, far more than I was expecting. I liked the explanation of how certain things happened, but was disappointed that with all the clever renaming of people, she just called Caesar's cousin "Octavio." Four stars, and I'll probably read the sequel to see what happens with the Marc Antony character. Using for PS #14, Modern Retelling of a Classic, although I'll probably find something else for that prompt eventually.
Ozy and Millie: Perfectly Normal by Dana Simpson. Book Riot's Read Harder newsletter said this was a completed webcomic, so I read it. It's not really a story from start to finish, but lots of comics about slice of life with two fox children who are anything but perfectly normal. Very cute and easy read, finished in an maybe an hour. Not for PS prompt, but using for Read Harder #5, A Completed Webcomic.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel. My mom had a friend recommend this to her after we had both read The Nightingale. Mom read it months ago, but my library hold finally came in. After The Nightingale, which was longer and more grim, this one was harder to appreciate. I was very annoyed with the main character's mother, who didn't seem to grasp what being Jewish in France after the Nazi occupation really meant. After so many books where everyone in Nazi occupied zones seem to know exactly how terrible everything in, I didn't find characters who thought the world was still fine believable. I'm sure those people existed, but I can't see a Polish Jewish woman as one of those people. And that took off a star for me. A good story, but the mother ruined it. Using for PS #6, About a Forbidden Romance, because the main character is Jewish and she falls for a Catholic (gasp!).
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. After being disappointed by the last book, I wanted something fun and light (and that I already owned). I found this one on my Kindle and had a very enjoyable evening. I see I read it a few months early for the group, but should be able to join the group read discussion when we get there. Using for PS #27, a BookTok rec.

Currently Reading:
Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. Listening to the audiobook of the first Kate Daniels and have 2 hours left. I really have forgotten a lot of early Kate.
The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914 by Margaret MacMillan. No progress made. Need to get back to it.
Up Next:
The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. Just got it this afternoon from the library, so will probably start it tonight.
QotW: What other bookish social media or blogs do you use regularly?
I don't especially frequent other places that are book discussions. I mostly follow a lot of my favorite authors, especially on Twitter, if they're still posting there. I check Ilona Andrews' blog daily, which is usually a treat. Seanan McGuire is a lot of fun on twitter as well. I know I found Lillie Lainoff and S.L. Huang because of their Twitter presence.

Oh we are the same age, I was in high school in the early 80s, too. I read the Foundation trilogy back then, and really liked it.
I decided a few years ago to read & re-read the entire Robot / Empire / Foundation series in order. I obviously started with the Robot books. Daneel is great and all, and I always enjoy a mystery, but good LORD was Asimov sexist. I had to stop after the third Robot book and I gave up on re-reading the rest. I didn't notice the sexism when I was a kid, but I sure notice it now. You must have picked up on it back then, you were more astute than I was.

The Appeal: really fun mystery! very much enjoyed
The Secret to Superhuman Strength: I liked it, but it wasn't as compelling as Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic
QOTW:
Besides goodreads, I follow some book or book adjacent accounts on youtube, tiktok, and instagram. And I listen to a couple book podcasts. Goodreads is the only place where I'm a contributor though; the others are more passive consumption.

Finished:
Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower- this was a really good book, part memoir part examination of the intersection of race and feminism.
- no prompt for me, but could be used for "only text on cover"
Beautiful Country- this was a great memoir. Qian Julie Wang is so good at showing how confusing the world can be for a child. She's able to capture how things felt to her growing up in such an affecting way. Towards the end I had to pause reading until I got home, cause I was starting to have to many feelings. Really good memoir.
-30 A book that's on a celebrity book-club list
Currently Reading:
Always Never- a sweet little French graphic novel I will probably finish after dinner. I just need something light and cute
Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook- currently listening to this. I love Anthony Bourdain. There are definitely some moments where you can tell it was written a decade ago, but for the most part it's been very fun.
House of Earth and Blood- I find Sarah J Maas books super entertaining, but I'm not super sold on this one yet. Reading it for my friend though, so I'm going to keep giving it a shot
Exhalation- still working through these short stories. Got sidetracked last week.
QotW:
I follow some bookish accounts on youtube- that's probably my main other place. I follow about 6 accounts, all with very different main focuses on genres. One reads mainly eastern European books, one loves scifi, one loves translated books and experimental literary books. One I follow just posted a video about "Middle Grade March" where you're meant to read middle grade books, and she mentioned so many books I haven't heard of that sound really great. Between youtube and here, my tbr is constantly out of control

Yeah even then the sexism was pretty awful (I was always pretty attuned to it because I went on career paths that women often didn't so I got hit with that all the time). I mean I give him credit for at least trying to put a woman in there but man it wasn't good. Many of the early SF writers were as bad or worse which is what I think pushed me more heavily into my other love, mysteries

What did you think of The Menu??"
I almost don't know how I feel. It was supposed to be a horror comedy, but it neither made me laugh nor did it scare me. I thought it would be a slow burn movie, but it ramped up pretty quick (view spoiler) But the tension just stayed there with no ups and downs.
The over all idea and the segments with the title cards with the courses and what was served was great. It was well acted. (view spoiler)
Sometimes I finish books or movies and I just think "WTF was that?" The Menu was one of those movies.

Books I finished:
The Dressmakers of Auschwitz: The True Story of the Women Who Sewed to Survive ⭐⭐⭐
ATY: Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy
I have read so many WW2 books, and yet I hadn't come across this particular story before.
Disney Manga: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey ⭐⭐⭐
PS: Pet character.
It's a middle grade manga. The artwork is great, it's fun to be back in Halloweentown/Christmastown but there was almost no story. Major dissappointment.
Major Operation ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I had read this one before. And the series really did keep getting better with each book. But now I want to keep going with the series, and my library has apparently gotten rid of their copies of the next few books in the series, and none of the other libraries in my province have them either. And I can't find it for order from the bookstore.🤬
Norse Mythology, Vol. 1 & Norse Mythology, Vol. 2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nadine's Challenge: Norse mythology.
I read the regular book back in December, and I actually prefer the graphic novel version.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built ⭐⭐⭐⭐
PS: Fav past challenge - Robot character
It's official. I have to track down everything Becky Chambers has written and read it.
Books in progress:
Is There Bacon in Heaven?: A Memoir (The aforementioned library book)
Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks
Be the Serpent

Finished:
The Turn of the Screw -PS should have read in high school. ATY - novella. gave it a 1 star review.
Matthew by Grace Burrowes - 2nd in Jaded Gentlemen series and should be read together with 1st as it completes a story arc. No prompts, I just desperately needed a regency romance wallow after the Henry James.
The Marlow Murder Club edgar nominee and terrific - PS same initials but reversed (my challenge, my rules). ATY book that is light
The Casual Vacancy - PS independent bookstore. ATY - Book by author read last year. Loved this! Would also fit ATY book that is dark.
Currently reading:
Axel by Grace Burrowes - 3rd in series
Hamnet
Miss Percy's Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons
QOTW: Don't read or listen to any.

I've already started on a draft and I'm at 495. Good thing I have 2 weeks, this is going to take forever!

Finished:
If We Were Villains for A book that fulfills your favorite prompt from a past challenge (A dark academia book)
A Winter's Tale for A book with a love triangle
24 Hours in Ancient Rome: A Day in the Life of the People Who Lived There for A book that takes place entirely in one day
Cat Among the Pigeons - not for the challenge
Slippery Creatures for A book that was self-published
On Wilder Seas: The Woman on the Golden Hind for A book by a first-time author
The Vanishing of Audrey Wilde for A book about a family
Haven't started anything new yet, but planning to pick up Under the Whispering Door next, which is on the listopia for A book with a pet character

Yeah the mom was unrelentingly awful, and I didn't understand why Harmel wrote her like that. It was for almost the entire book, the mom just verbally attacking her daughter. I'm sure many people at that time at first thought things wouldn't get so bad - Maus handles that really well. But the way her mom blamed her for everything was over the top.

I used to read them regularly, too, then something changed and I can't figure out what it was, but it's just not that informative or interesting now.

Yes it's like Slocumb REALLY had a bone to pick with the mothers of the world. You'll notice he barely mentions Ray's father.

My creative brain needs to create something. And while at the office creating is ‘on hold’ until some organizational stuff is sorted out, I decided to create my own blog. Happy brain, happy me.

Strategic Writing for UX: Drive Engagement, Conversion, and Retention with Every Word by Torrey Podmajersky⭐⭐⭐
Not for PS, management/ content writing book.
The Time in Between by María Dueñas ⭐⭐⭐⭐
PS #6, a book about a forbidden romance
This book is categorized as a thriller, which I normally don’t like. But I did like this book. And I do like Spanish thrillers anyway. They start slow, to picture the situation of the characters. And then speed picks up and you are on a roller coaster with your character, who you obviously love by then. That was exactly what happened with this book. And you learn a lot about Franco’s Spain. I watched the Netflix documentary ‘Die Wahrheit über Franco’ about Franco last fall, so the events in this book were familiar to me.

No social media besides Goodreads. I crawl through RSS-feeds of several Dutch blogs like ‘De leesclub van alles’ (The book club of everything). Last weeks I clicked through lots of blogs for inspiration for my own.

Finished:
Elektra not for a challenge. I looooved Ariadne and was incredibly excited to see the author had another book out that was a Greek myth from the perspective of women. I was interested to see if the author could make Elektra sympathetic to me, because I’ve always found her siding with her father to be pretty yuck. I still vehemently oppose Elektra’s stance in the book but she was written in a way where I can see how she ended up in such a messed up headspace.
Currently Reading:
Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Great Adventure Catholic Bible

QOTW:
Goodreads is about my only site. I have a book Instagram I don’t post to much but I do follow a lot of authors on there that I check occasionally. I find most book reviews off putting but there are a few book tiktokers I follow because they don’t bash books.
Challenges:
Popsugar - 4/40; 0/10
Read Harder - 3/24
Classics - 2/12
European Tour - 2/10
12 Friends - 2/12

@Brandon I'm so jealous of your Perlman concert. PBS has a really good biography show on him.
