Okay so I didn't wholly love this but found it such a quick and intense read and I flew through it this afternoon and evening. I gave it 3.5/5 stars overall and liked it marginally better than book one. I have a busy weekend in work so glad to have had the chance to read through this in one sitting and not fall behind :)

First quarter - (view spoiler)[I really enjoyed Kamran's perspective to open the novel even if his new distrust of Alizeh hurt to read about. I hope they are not apart for the entire novel!

I'm not enjoying Cyrus' character nearly as much as his but I'm eager to see how Alizeh copes in his kingdom and manages to escape from her betrothal to him. Her position is now made more difficult than ever, as she is caught between the two opposing kingdoms, and I have no clue how she will defeat them both. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[I'm really not sure that Alizeh should be trusting Sarra. There's as much going on with Cyrus that Alizeh does not yet know of as there is with Alizeh that Kamran does not yet know of. They all think the other is the bad guy and it isn't so straight-forward. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Eugh I wish they would hurry up and all join together. I'm bonding with these characters much more than in book one and want a happy ending for them all. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[I thought this was a duology all the time I was reading this so the ending had me initially shocked. I have so long to wait until book three!!! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1
(view spoiler)[I just started and it sucks to see Kamran feel betrayed by 3 people who he was really close to, all in one go. Whilst I detest the miscommunication trope in most books, the miscommunication seen in this chapter that causes Kamran to think that Alizeh was faking all her emotions and is actually friends with Iblees and Cyrus is realistic I think. There was really no chance for Kamran, Alizeh or Hazan to talk to each and gain understanding of the situation because of the absolute chaos going on. And then Alizeh is snatched away by a dragon and Hazan is dragged away to be hanged. Reasonable and believable miscommunication isn't any less frustrating though 😭 I loved this quote:

'"Very well," the southern king said finally. "Never say I'm not merciful. I'll make this quick. You will not suffer."
"And I," Kamran said, the rasp of his voice like gravel, "will make certain that your torment is never-ending."' (hide spoiler)]
