I was glad the way the plot unfolded, letting us know something "bigger" was going on there without it really coming out until the end. Guessing book two will have a lot of "lore" and background. I am bracing for data dumps and hoping McClelland does it well. I thought this was a solid start with good characters, but Powder Mage was stronger. (I guess, I'd have to go back and reread book 1 of the original series). Glad Montego goes right to childhood first meetings. Read chapter 1 of that this morning.

Totally. I blame Kickstarters. though it feels like book 2 might be tougher to write and perhaps a longer book since there's a plot to advance while so much out there to explain that was not explained in he first book.

I agree with a lot--I feel like it took me a while to find balance with the story... part of me wishes the book had started with chapter 1 instead of the prologue, so we first meet Demir (view spoiler)[drunk and gambling, trying to buy a spare piece of skyglass to shoo away the nightmares, and get the prologue as flashbacks in dribs and drabs... I think I would have felt his trauma more then, but some of the character openings felt a bit forced instead.

Still, that feeling didn't last too long, and I really liked how the story developed. I also really liked how tense stuff would happen... and then McClellan wouldn't leave us hanging long before he resolved it. Like when Demir was arrested, or when Thessa found out about Demir being the Lightning Prince, or even the ending, with Montego & Kizzie. We might be given cliffhangers, but we never had anything dragged out really hard. That helped make the whole story feel kinda... less urgent, maybe? Powder Mage always felt really urgent, gritty, definitely Grimdark. I kinda liked not being stressed all the time reading. (hide spoiler)]

I tried to find an answer to that... couldn't find anything. >.< "Epic Fantasy Series" seems to be the only descriptor... I didn't look too hard though.
