The 2 Kindle editions are the same but instead of merging is it possible to use one of those editions to add the missing paperback?

No we can't change it to another edition because people who have shelved that edition would then have shelved a paperback instead of the Kindle. The paperback was already there but not linked to the Kindle edition.
