i still have to read the kill order - i have it and have had it in my library but after the pain of reading through the rest of the series, i've been putting it off.

is it safe to assume that these prequels etc are better than the final bits of the main series? i loved TMR, but didn't care for TST or TDC.

Some people hated the Kill Order, others loved it. I don't know what I can say about it. I personally didn't like it as much as the series, but it was okay.
