The Lathe of Heaven - Ursula LeGuin - 4 stars

This relatively short book is packed with big ideas and thoughts worthy of much contemplation. Taking place in the not-too-distant future, when climate change has had devastating consequences, with dwindling resources on an over populated Earth, it features a man, George, with the ability to change reality by dreaming. George remembers the world before his dream changed it, and is terrified of what havoc he may wreak simply by sleeping and dreaming. For a time, he uses drugs to suppress his dreams, but ultimately he begins treatment with a psychologist, Dr. Haber, who seeks to "cure" George. But Dr. Haber soon realizes that he can use George and his dreams to manipulate reality. Can he change the future course of humanity? Can he change his own path to fame and power? Should someone use this power if they possess it, even if it all worked out well? Of course, it does not work out as well as both George and Dr. Haber hope. Even though Dr. Haber seems to have good intentions, there are twists and turns which have serious consequences. Can George stop him and still save himself?
The ever-shifting reality becomes more outrageous with every dream and George must find a way to live within each new life, with big philosophical questions always in play. What is real? am I the only one with this power? Is there a God?
Plus, I think it's a good story! The twists and turns that border on absurd are, I thought, kinda genius. Given that the book was published in 1971, LeGuin's prescient view is also genius.

Interesting review. The big ideas were thought provoking and it had an entertaining plot too. I want to read more by her.

I just threw this one back, I loved the Earthcycyle-this one I just could not get into, Sci-fi is not my thing

Ah, sorry it didn't work for you Joanne. Sci-fi is def one of my happy places. I havent read Earthsea, so I suppose I should!
I did read Dispossessed, which I gave 5 stars.

I liked this book too! I especially appreciated all the different facts about the dreams while also enjoying the plot.
