If someone recommends a specific book in this series can it be read without reading the first book in the series?

Yes, there is an overall plot in that starts in the first book and goes trough all of them but every book focuses on another person and can be read alone. You wouldn’t understand everything but the book will be still enjoyable :) I hope that helps
