That wasn't the rule, but for the most part it's probably fine. I'm more concerned about when a book is too short. But I don't think a hardcover version on Goodreads and a hardcover version on Amazon are going to be so many pages apart that it really effects this activity. I just want people to know what I'm checking if anyone challenges an individual situation. And in general that would be if a book is too short to even be used.

Joy D | 10061 comments I usually read longer books, so it's generally not a problem, but I have an issue with scrolling (I get vertigo) so when there are huge numbers of editions, I just use the one at the top of the list.

I plan to use the Amazon hard cover for the page count if it exists, and if not, look at top-of-the-list hard cover edition on GR. I will check with you if I am uncertain, Anita.

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Rule Clarification - Porter Level and Above:

The following rule was specified in my post Subdue the Shelf: What's Next:

You will still be eligible for special rolls, however a special roll will be designated by two adjacent rolls of the die

This rule needs some clarification beyond what was stated, but if you read it literally, you'll have it right. Here are the specifics, and I will provide an example below.

- Basically any two adjacent single die rolls may count as a special roll.
- If you roll two dice at a time due to reading a longer book, that would count as a standalone roll as before (clerk level).
- More than two dice don't count toward a special roll.
- If you roll a single die, and then roll more than a single die, the next roll of one die is not adjacent to the one you rolled before the multi-dice roll.

Example 1:

Person A rolls the following sequence

6
5
4
1
1

For special roll purposes, we would consider
6-5 (yes, special)
5-4 (not special)
4-1 (not special)
1-1 (special)

Example 2:

Person B rolls

6
5
4-4-1
1

For purposes of special rolls, we would consider
6-5 (special)
4-4-1 (not special)

and that's it. The 5 and 1 are NOT adjacent. More than two dice will not count as a special roll or in any way toward a special roll.

If the 4-4-1 was instead a two dice roll of 4-4, that would be considered a special roll.

Questions are welcomed!

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments I have one question. Can the same single die roll be used for two special rolls. For example:

6
5
2

6-5 would be a special roll
5-2 could also be a special roll (adds up to 7)

Or is the 5 no longer considered since it was used for a special roll already?

Excellent question.

Both of those would be special rolls!

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments I had a great question behind the scenes about the various designations, and I wanted to address it for everyone.

I said above:

Once you have completed your initial game board, you will have the option to continue and earn one of the following designations by year's end:

Conductor (Pro) - 8 or more loops
Station Master (Expert) - 6 or more loops
Engineer (Advanced) - 4 or more loops
Porter (Easygoing) - 2 or more loops
Clerk (Novice) - 1 loop

So, I think I did confuse things when I congratulated Joy by saying she was an Engineer. Technically, she's becoming an Engineer as she has completed the requirements for Porter. Now, she is working on her loops to be an Engineer (which will require TWO loops of her Engineer board). When she has looped a gameboard 4 times, then she will start working on becoming a Station Master in a new tracking area.

Please let me know if you have questions! I don't think this was quite as clear as it should have been.

To make it as crystal clear as I can for everyone:

Clerk - Complete 1 loop in order to move to Porter tracking thread
You are now a Clerk having completed 1 gameboard

Porter - Complete 1 loop on a new game board in order to move to Engineer tracking thread
You are now a Porter having completed a total of 2 gameboard loops since the start of the game.

Engineer - Complete 2 loops on a new game board in order to move to Station Master tracking thread
You are now an Engineer having completed 4 gameboard loops since the start of the game.

Station Master - Complete 2 loops on a new game board in order to move to Conductor tracking thread
You are now a Station Master after completing 6 gameboard loops since the start of the game

Conductor - Complete 2 loops on a new game board in order to become a Conductor.
After completing a total of 8 gameboard loops YOU ARE NOW A CONDUCTOR!!! Congratulations!!!!

If anyone wants to continue after that, I'll make up a way for you to get to retirement, but I'm hopeful 8 loops tires everyone out!

If I did not add a single book to my tbr ... I have enough books listed now to go for 30 loops ... just saying ...

LOL!!! Well, my creativity knows no bounds so if you become a conductor, I'll put my thinking cap on!!!

Okay, my creativity may have bounds, but I do think I can extend if we get to that point.

Joy D | 10061 comments Question about the 2nd loop for Engineer:

Do I need to keep the same books or can I create a new board for the 2nd loop? The reason I'm asking is that I put a few books on my current Engineer list that I want to replace if I don't land on them (since I need to read them for non-PBT challenges).

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12562 comments Joy, I was wondering about 2 loops and thought Anita meant that you had to do Porter list twice-you do not, I talked with her this morning about this. Your list in Engineer is fine and that is where you should be.

I don't mind if you change your books with every new board/loop, but it's not required.

Just make sure to post the second board for Engineer in its own post (as opposed to editing the existing board).

Will do. Thanks Anita!

That sounds good to me too. I'll call my next list Engineer 1.
